She earned a PhD in Islamic studies from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and previously served as a lecturer and assistant professor at the Faculty of Usul-al-Din at International Islamic University, Islamabad. Hashmi founded the Al-Huda International Welfare Foundation in 1994, which initiated educational programs teaching the Quran and Hadith to women, aiming to enhance their Islamic observance and understanding. Over time, the foundation expanded to include schools, seminaries, and social welfare initiatives.
In 2004, the foundation established the Al-Huda Institute in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, focusing on Quranic and Hadith studies, drawing students globally, including from Australia.
Hashmi has gained renown as a feminist scholar in Pakistan and internationally, attracting large crowds, sometimes exceeding ten thousand attendees, to her religious lessons known as "Dars." Many of her followers are from liberal, educated backgrounds, predominantly women.
Her mission emphasizes a renewal of Islamic understanding by delving into the core scriptures. In contrast to rigid and confrontational approaches to proselytizing, Hashmi advocates for her students to lead by example and voluntarily educate others.
