Question, sir: How do I know whether “particle” is a preposition, or an adverb in a phrasal verb?

Now that's a good question! Unfortunately there is no easy answer. I blogged about it here, but even I still get confused! ellii.com/blog/difference-between-preposition-and-adverb My advice is to not get hung up on the part of speech after the verb since knowing the part of speech in a phrasal verb isn't really that important. It's much more important to learn which particle goes with which verb and what the meaning is.

Good try! "Write up" sounds natural with something official like a report, but we wouldn't use it for a story. Just "write a story" sounds better.
