We’ve often referred to certain venues as “big” waters, and we’re sure that this phrase means different things to different people. A large Fenland drain or a reservoir such a Grafham or Rutland can be described as big, and some of the Lake District waters most certainly can be.
In episode III of Esox Diaries, as is fairly common on the channel, we visit two of the biggest in the country; we would need to travel to Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland to find bigger.
What these waters offer, besides a humbling sense of perspective, is the opportunity to explore. However, exploring on lochs of this size requires a bit of leg work. Although it’s a limited possibility, finding a handy layby and rolling out of the car onto an easily accessible location doesn’t provide the best of what these lochs can offer; besides, fishing these waters is all about getting away from the crowds.
Let’s see if a little effort truly does equal reward.
