Playing the chaconne on a solitary unaccompanied violin is "heroic", but it really doesn't do it justice! (And I'm saying this as a violinist.) An ensemble like this brings out the full symphonic sonority of the more dramatic sections, and all the "hidden" melodies a violinist would (try to) imply with careful control of bow speed, pressure, and vibrato can be explicitly played. Beautiful work!

After this, J S Bach and Adolfo Sax came on stage and gave each other a hand shake. Bach is so well written it sounds perfect on any instrument. These musicians however bring another level to the music.

I am pretty confident if Bach was brought back from the dead and listen to this, it would bring tears of joy to his eyes. Many of the big name violinists do not understand this piece as well as these saxophonists do. Absolutely amazing transcription and performance. Thanks for sharing.

What a wonderful demonstration of the power and depth of Bach's eternal music! It can be transcribed to almost any instrument, and something quite new emerges, while remaining faithful to the original score! This particular version was a complete surprise, a real treat! Tky v much.

I was fortunate enough to be around composer Mark Mellits one week who transcribes his music for various ensembles. When the saxes played' 'Groove Machine' he said "God, I love saxophones"... Adolphe Sax was a genius designing his series of horns. No more proof is needed of Sax's vision than this performance. And if you have enough money, you can buy one of his original horns today. The ESP performs Mellits' music in another KZbin

Among many other things this shows what musicians are capable of when mastering the tonal possibilities of their instruments, an art that thankfully seems to be gaining somewhat of a rebirth possibly or at least more exposure due to youtube and the wonderfully generous folks posting such high quality offerings! This goes towards the re-birth of interest in what I think might be truly "Old-School" playing, from a time before fancy condenser microphones and other high tech sound reinforcement gear - a time when musicians needed to learn the full range of tone, expression, dynamic range and in general how to reach out without technical support (other than what comes from the quality of their instrument itself). For this I'll be eternally grateful!

Fine job! Especially with 9 musicians playing from memory. I still think the violin is the ultimate instrument for this, and the fact that it cannot actually be played on a violin as written is a commentary from Bach about the ultimate mystery. I would also argue that the ability to play all the notes (by a full orchestra, a computer, whatever) does not equal a fully successful performance. These folks gave it a good shot!

Who would have thought..........? I have listened to this a dozen times and each time, I hear something I did not hear the time before, only Bach could write such a momentous piece, and these musicians performed it perfectly. Congratulations on a performance well done. I have heard Josh Bell play it, Lisitsa play it, Xavier on the organ, and I think I like this performance better than any I have ever heard and have downloaded it and play it often.

@nitsua0246 7 жыл бұрын
Flo Thurneyssen, Ronald Caravan put out a book of many Bach solo works for strings (and one flute piece) including the second partita in d for violin (bvw 1004), all of which transposed for saxophone. He however left out the chaconne from his transposition as he considered it too difficult to be performed solo on a saxophone, as well as impractical if performed with techniques designed to replicate violin rolls as there are so many. I disagree and am working on an arrangement for Bari (sorry) so you can look out for it on muse score in the near future and simply shift it up a half or whole step to fit the bottom of tenor range.
