I have some questions. 1- how does it compare to PIR in sense of price? 2- what is the power consumption compared to PIR? 3- Does it have problems with wind or false alarms like PIR? 4- can it distinguish between cats and humans? 5- does it have problems if you put in inside a case?

1. they are about $5 vs 10 cents 2. a lot more power, 50-100mA, no good for batteries 3. it is not affected by wind at all. Much fewer false alarms than PIR 4. Not the hlk ones 5. It can see through many plastics. Mine have an open front.

@originalmianos thank you! For the power consumption i agree it's not good for battery powered applications. However if it has some low power modes I can make it work. There's a Rd-03L model which is low power and datasheet says it runs in uA range. However the datasheet is inconsistet about this.

Thank you for the fantastic video explaining how the RD-03d works. However, I would like to know where you found the documentation that provides the command codes to configure the RD-03d in single target and multi target modes. On the manufacturer's website, you can only find the document referring to the RD-03 serial communication protocol and it does not include the commands that were used in the demonstration programs for the module's operation.

Very important: keep detecting presence if object stopped moving in a middle of room, or if speed was zero. Detection should stop only when object has moved out of range, preferrably only in a configurable place (at a door). If it was done this way, it would be the ultimate presence detector. Without this functionality it's still a motion sensor. I've messed with these radars and they still fail to detect a completely still human.

I have a couple of multi-target mmWave devices that work with HA via WiFi. I had used them to turn lights on when I'm at my desk and turn off when I leave. Two different vendors, at least one is ESP32 based. A word of caution - both started acting erratically after a few months and the sensors eventually stopped working. I think both died due to heat, which is disappointing because the ambient temperature where they're located would have maybe only hit 85F/30C. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has had this problem.

Can it differentiate between target sizes? I've considered millimeter wave but the inability to narrow the detection bandwidth without major study and complication has been a problem. While I appreciate the sensitivity whilst being able to penetrate walls/doors, etc., I have house cats that constantly trigger sensors that aren't intentionally limited in scope. If I could have a set point of 20+ kilos mass as an example, I could install one sensor per area without much consideration beyond hiding them for esthetics.

I don't think mmWave will replace most PIR sensors. Reason 1: They use more power than PIR sensors making battery-powered sensors infeasable (battery life less than 2-3 years is not enough). Reason 2: Privacy - mmWave can collect too much data. A PIR sensor is enough in hotel rooms. However, mmWave could be useful beacuse it can measure distance - eg you could use it to turn on the light at the right spots.

Much better to just use camera with object detection. Granted it's a bit more expensive since you need camera + edge SOC + AI processing unit for fast inference but still very doable for around $100 with enough accuracy to not only detect all the people in the room, their positions and even their pose (ie someone raises fists in aggressive stance and they get a face full of paintballs 😂).
