FUN FACT - "Hyams Beach, NSW, DOES NOT have world's whitest sand according to the Guinness World Records." It's a claim that has been published repeatedly for decades. The Sydney Morning Herald refers to it as far back as 1987. And now, every few months, a major news publisher (including this one) or someone on social media picks up that tag and runs with it. No questions asked. The only problem is, it's not true. The tiny coastal town in New South Wales, near Jervis Bay, has become a victim of fake news and its own popularity. Home to only 100 people, the population swells into the thousands over the summer as tourists flock to this seaside village to see the "world's whitest sand" and take the perfect Instagram shot. Sure, it's white - whiter than the sand at Bondi and St Kilda. But it's not the world's whitest - Hyams Beach is not even home to Australia's whitest sand. And to further debunk the myth, the Guinness World Records doesn't even have a "world's whitest sand" category. So, where is the whitest beach? It started as an afternoon banter over beers for Noel Schoknecht, soil scientist and former chairman of the National Committee on Soil and Terrain, to find the country's whitest beach. A term of reference was then drafted and samples taken from beaches across the country. The samples had to be taken from the swash zone (the gently sloping area between the water and the dunes) and they could not be treated in any way apart from air-drying. The winning beach was Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park on Western Australia's south coast. Followed by Hellfire Bay in WA, Tallebudgera Beach in Queensland, Whitehaven Beach in Queensland, Squeaky Beach in Victoria, Boat Harbour Beach in Tasmania, Hyams Beach in New South Wales, and Bromby Island in Northern Territory.

It looks a beautiful place. Is it safe swim in the sea? No jellyfishes or sharks? Is the water warm or cold?
@DAWNadventures Жыл бұрын
There’s sharks all along the WA coast, and definitely a few around Esperance! But Lucky Bay is shallow and very safe. No jellyfish either, not bad like up north

Im planning to come here in October. I dont have a car tho, is there a bus or local airport i can depart from via uber that can take me to this park?
@DAWNadventures9 ай бұрын
Hi Dan. Esperance is a relatively remote part of WA so doesn’t have Uber or a huge amount of public transport. Potentially the best thing to do would be to hire a car as Lucky Bay and Hellfire etc are a decent way out of town

@@DAWNadventures i dont drive. So i guess i am out of luck?
@DAWNadventures8 ай бұрын
There would be tours that head out that way. But in terms of public transport you may struggle!

Is it free to swim there or there is an entrance fee?
@DAWNadventures8 ай бұрын
I think it’s about $15 per car to enter the National Park. You can get annual passes if you’re going to be visiting often or going to lots of parks which saves in the long term

This video is about the stunning Lucky Bay in WA and I would love to visit it one day but there is no need to through in our faces that Hyams beach NSW is not the world’s whitest sand . It is still a beautiful beach and the sand is still pure white silica sand .
@DAWNadventures8 ай бұрын
Haha sorry Louisa!!! I’ll have to take your word about Hyams beach - hopefully I can get there one day!
@louisaklimentos75838 ай бұрын
@@DAWNadventures I hope you do but hopefully visit when the sun is shining because this is when the sand looks the whitest . Go into the national park Booderee National Park and there are more beautiful natural beaches in there .
