Across Western Europe, anxiety about Chinese spying is growing. A man working for a prominent German politician from the far-right AfD party has been arrested. Prosecutors accuse him of passing on information from the European parliament, where he worked since 2019, and of spying on the Chinese opposition abroad. This comes just a day after three Germans were arrested on suspicion of handing over technology with potential military applications.

It is as far as they have power to go. Other institutions will handle the legal charges I'm sure, so their responsibility is to make sure that they are no more part of it than absolutely necessary. I can agree there's a weakness in these parties, the same way parties on the left could have the same sort of weakness a generation ago. Then it would be maoists, leninists and so on buying into the stories of these groups, now it is people who have learned to distrust the political establishment here in the West so hard they fall for the idea that someone else surely must be better. The principle of it all isn't that different really, yet we call them political opposites.
