This was an eye opener for the rest of the football world and those eyes will get real wide over the next few years as the expanded playoffs allows the top defenses to finally and consistently start getting into the mix in games that matter and aren't being phoned in.

A dominant defense will always shut down a high-flying offense. I said all along that the media was vastly overrating Washington's chances. This team was a 1.5 point underdog to Oregon State in Corvallis. There's no way any legitimate top 4 team is an underdog to the Oregon State Beavers no matter where on Earth that game is played. Over the years, we've seen plenty of supposedly unstoppable offenses stopped. Look at what the Huskers did to Danny Wuerffel in the '96 Fiesta Bowl, Bob Stoops against FSU, Miami against Eric Crouch, Ohio State against Marcus Mariota, etc etc etc. Michigan was dominant all year long on defense. The real #1 vs. #2 championship game would have been Michigan vs. Georgia. It's unfortunate that the SEC Championship Game prevented that from happening, and we ended up with a Cinderella team at #2 instead.

Penix is a great quarterback but you could see this coming. No disrespect to Washington fans, but hearing, on repeat, that Washington played a tougher schedule and that Washington had been tested... well, let's just say it was heard a lot by some people who were just waiting for that reality hammer to drop. Playing other great offenses is not a tough schedule and having half a playbook missing doesn't exactly make a great offense. Facing defenses worse than half of the Big Ten is not being tested. There was some great talent on the Huskies and they could do well elsewhere, but the Big Ten is a different world where it isn't just a race to see who throws the ball furthest the fastest. Washington had no defense, at least nothing like Michigan was used to, and Michigan had been putting up a 36 ppg average for the season. Them being in that ballpark was easy to predict. Washington had a great offense in Penix and his receivers, but Michigan was purpose built to stop CJ Stroud and those Buckeye receivers, definitely a high level of offensive talent. The Michigan defense may not have seen a Washington level of offense this season, but they had seen that level over the last couple years. The stats coming into this did not lie. It was clearly going to be Michigan's to lose. Washington was missing all the stats that mattered against Michigan and Michigan had all the stats that mattered against Washington. Welcome to the Big Ten, Huskies. The rivalry has started. You have a lot of work to do but it seems like the folks at the helm will be able to run a solid program going forward once they have adjusted their difficulty sliders to match up with life in the Big Ten. Washington is going to get tough now that they will be living in the Big Ten and be a force down the line that won't blink anymore at strong defenses.

Their record didn’t reflect it, but they lost 5 games this year by 1 score or less. Last year lost 8/9 by 1 score or less. I believe management wull take that into consideration heavily.

@mattst.germain4023 it's still possible that he could be fired. Some teams are just slow and dumb. Tennessee just fired their coach and he at least had a winning record.

@@justified004 yeah I won’t disagree with your statement, it’s possible. Let me ask you this. Do you want Fields back or draft new QB? If you had total say in what they do in the offseason/draft what would you do? I’m honestly just asking, not being a smartass. Want to see what you think compared to me. 👍
@justified004 Жыл бұрын
@mattst.germain4023 if I was a Bears fan, I would want to draft Caleb. Even though Fields has improved, it's not to a level of that would I would be comfortable paying him $50M after next year. The Bears can get more for Fields now with this last year on his deal vs. waiting another year or giving him an extension. At this point, it's more about the time and money Fielda has left on his contract. Caleb can come in with a fresh start and no baggage at the start of a rookie deal. I'm a Niners fan, and I can attest to the roster you can build when you have a QB on a rookie deal. They don't want to give Fields a $50M contract after next year, and they have an out with being able to get Caleb. It's better to get a 2nd or 4th round pick for him now. Who knows, maybe they can finesse a team that doesn't have a good pick but is desperate for a QB like the Giant or Steelers.

@@justified004 I respect your views/opinions, and appreciate your take on it. There are so many variables to consider. As I’m not paying any NFL players salary, I couldn’t care less what the Bears choose to spend on their players. I never understood why people get so hung up on that acting like it affects their wallet. I get what your saying though. I would explore an extension for Fields and see what he and his agent are looking for. I’d trade the number one overall pick to either Redskins/Pats who have the #2 and #3 picks respectively for draft capital. Both those teams need a QB. I’d draft Harrison JR with my 1st pick, then take the best available OL/DT available. Hammer free agency (they have a lot of cap space) and continue to build around Fields. We live in an “instant gratification” world. Didn’t get what we wanted or win a SB after 3 years? Let’s fire everyone and start over… Don’t put faith in people and show them you believe in them. Fields has proven a lot more than people give him credit for. He’s proven he’s a hard worker who is humble and doesn’t blame others when things don’t go well. He’s proven he has the ability ability to make great throws at times, extend plays with his legs, and that he has an undeniable chemistry with DJ Moore. He hasn’t gotten in legal trouble, fined by the NFL, made stupid videos acting like a thug and flashing guns and somehow hasn’t beaten up any pregnant mistresses. There are no guarantees in the draft, and Williams has mentioned wanting partial ownership in a team lol… who does that? I wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole. Bears defense showed tremendous improvement the last 7/8 games, and they’re a very very young team. Had they not blow the games late to Broncos/Lions/Browns, they make the playoffs. They lost 5 games the season by 1 score or less, and 8 games last year by 1 score or less. It’s not like they’re getting blown out regularly. They aren’t too far off from having a team that is a threat. I just don’t feel trading Fields and getting a new QB gets them any closer any faster to being a team that contends year in and year out.

Watch the game the shout out should be given to the refs who didn't call a single holding call on the Michigan defensive backs because I'm not exaggerating they had handfuls of Jersey and held every receiver on every play

Be that as it may, the Washington O-line had fistfuls of Michigan pass rushers' jerseys in their hands on every play. The Refs let the boys play, like you might see in an NBA playoff game where fouls ae the norm, go uncalled, and the announcers chortle about "great defense". Maybe if they used touch football rules, the Huskies might have won.

Face it crybaby, Washington was outplayed the entire game. The PAC 12 is weak and has been for many years.

This game would have been a lot different if Penix, not under pressure could have thrown accurate passes. He was terrible at seeing wide open receivers, and when he did see them , he missed them.
@jerrythor6102 Жыл бұрын
He was terrible because of the pressure and the defense. There's no other defense like them and and he was not prepared for it. The coach Northern team was expecting it which they should have known if they would have known anything about how Michigan played all year. That's a case of underestimating your opponent

Thank you for bringing up the fact that cheating has been going on in sports forever and all those folks who wanna clutch their pearls this morning and pretend like they actually care about the cheating scandal which never actually involved Harbaugh to begin with can just go away and deal with it. I think Harbaugh should go to the NFL just so he doesn't have to worry about the NCAA after this

Defense was the more surprising part?
@brentthebloodhound Жыл бұрын
Here is what’s going to happen. Over the next 20 days. Harbaugh is going to let San Diego offer him 100million. Then Michigan is going to offer him 150 million for 10 years. He’s using the NfL to get the most money out of Michigan. He has said 100 times he wants to be in Michigan. Ward Manuel said they want to keep him for 10 more years.
@Yesquire0 Жыл бұрын
Harbaugh's contract has been a media-created post-season story now for about five years. The script remains the same. Harbaugh plays coy and interviews with one or more NFL teams. We aren't privy to the exact details, but presumably an NFL team gives Harbaugh an offer. Harbaugh takes the NFL offer to Ann Arbor and asks why he should take less money to stay as Michigan HC. U of M. matches the NFL offer and Harbaugh stays.

Washington was down 17-3 early and kept it within 7 with 7 left in the 4th qtr. Everybody who actually watched the game knows it still could have gone either way. That ridiculously bad holding call on the big play to Odunze killed all hope.
@jerrythor6102 Жыл бұрын
Michigan has played that game all year. Just cuz it's close does it mean it could go either way at that point .They're going to finish by scoring a couple TDs and keeping the other team out of the end zone. they've done it every game

The 1Q determined the entire game. If Washington could've played the entire game like they did in the 3Q, it would've been a much different story. It was over when the Huskies couldn't run the ball nor hit the big play.
