People dont understand that players use these warnings to disrupt the opponents rhythm. Especially when your opponent is serving. This is why there should be a rule that if after you get a warning you decide to not play,you will get another warning as well after a certain time. Just like it happend to Ivashka against Mannarino in 2020. An umpire will never overule a time violation and Fokina knew it very well.

Partly agree. Although gamesmanship has become part of the sport, Fokina was already 30-0 down. Knowing a time violation would put him 40-0, seems foolish to try gamesmanship. At deuce/30-30, maybe? It shouldn't be overlooked either that it just might've been the crowd too. all imho...

You hear the spectators scream, but he should have waited on the baseline and should be making a gesture at the ump or something like that, that way he would have avoided a penalty. As opponent, I would not have wanted the point.

@@KingCast65 But I was referring to the violation itself as opposed to the effect on either player. The commentator (James Blake, I think) said “It’s going to be 40-0 when play resumes and that won’t change”, which sounded as though ADF had been assessed a point penalty. I can see where that would be upsetting enough to ask for the referree but not for a warning at the tail end of a match (IMO, of course)

You can clearly see that Felix was ready to serve and Fokina was not ready to recieve which he should have been. The rules clearly say that the game should continue in the pace of the server. Server cannot wait for the reciever and it was cleary that Felix was ready for quite some time. These serve rule should be inforced 100 percent of the time. If you have 20 or 25 seconds to serve than everytime you are over that time referee should react to that, it is breaking of the rules of the game. Like making the server wait for you, especially if it happens often.

It's basically players protesting because it's the only power they have, to delay the match. I get it and would be frustrated too. The ATP is run by robots these days with zero spirit of the law. Giving him a warning instead of asking the audience to STFU is absurd. Almost as absurd as spoiling the winner in the thumbnails. I hope a rival tennis organization starts to rival ATP. ATP needs competition.

To be fair, the rule does not provide equitable sanction. If a player gets a second time violations while serving, he has to play a second serve. If a returner gets a second time violation--even if the first one was received while serving--he loses the point.

FAA, too nice to his opponent, Fokina, uphold antics like delaying play to protest getting time violations and he complained at multiple points during the match, but at one point in the fifth set he sat in his chair for 5 minutes and waited until the tournament supervisor came out and protested to him, to be honest I think the last delay was the nail.........

Context? Was he assessed a point penalty? I didn’t see the match, it wasn’t in the highlights, and the only thing I’ve read is that he got a warning - but James Blake said “It’ll be 40-0 when play resumes; that won’t change”. That implies point penalty ❓❓🤔
@stephen146218 сағат бұрын
Supervisors always say the same thing, it’s a judgment call within the discretion of the chair umpire and never overturn the call. The players know this and shouldn’t be allowed to delay play further with a tantrum.

Tennis authority can allow to treat this like NBA fouling toward the end of the game to send people to the free throw line or penalize the offending player as shown here. In tennis I think once the momentum is gone then it's gone. It makes the tennis less interesting to see. NBA is different in that a two free throw to the winning team can still benefit the winning team. Feels like Felix get cheated constantly. Last time it was Draper although to be fair draper has match point but still not a legit point.

Fokina held his serve after this this to 4-3 and then broke to 5-3 after. Did it affect the outcome? Maybe, we will never know. Fokina got some much needed rest for free, and Felix who was dominating the 5th set till that point, might have lost his rhythm or gotten cold, nobody knows, but it is bad sportsmanship from Fokina to pull these antics.
