Joel Embiid's dominant post-up game and his improved shooting touch have made him into perhaps the most imposing force in the NBA. In this episode of Signature Shots, ESPN analyst Kirk Goldsberry examines the evolution of the Philladelphia 76ers star, who is both a throwback to an older era and a sign of the game's progress.

Great breakdown of Embiid's game. The thing is, Embiid is mobile while at the same, he's freaking huge so he's a matchup nightmare. He still needs to miss less games tho, but he's improving in that area. IF he can stay healthy, Joel will be a great one.

Credit to Embiid is a replica Hakeem but with less significant competition as Hakeem also a whole lot slower than Hakeem with his moves. Also credit to Embiid for reminding us of Hakeems dream shakes and bag of tricks while affirming da fact that Hakeem's moves will always be relevant in any ERA of basketball NOW.... Hakeem atleast is da 3rd best center in NBA history behind Wilt and Kareem. Not even Shaq and Russell are better than him. Those guys won more titles bcos they had better team mates than Hakeem.... besides Wilt won 2 titles as well !! Hakeem and Michaels ghosts will forever be around the NBA for the way they played in the toughest league era in NBA history. The players will hardly be as talented as even 80% of these 2 guys and yes that includes Lebron, Durant, Giannis etc etc !! ===================================== Truth... . be told !! Boldly

@@PabloSolim2006 luka isn’t in great shape. I don’t see his body lasting. He gets dinged up a lot, he’s playing heavy minutes, and he’s struggles with his weight. I think he needs to go holler at harden. Harden has found a great medium to keep his weight in check, and avoid major injuries for years. People forget how chubby harden was in hs. He shed a lot of that weight and maintained himself pretty well for a long time. Jokic maybe yeah. He may keep up enough to play a bit longer. Giannis is a mystery. He could flatline quicker than we think due to how physically demanding his game is at that size, ala Dwight Howard, or he could be Superman like bron. Hard to tell.

@@PabloSolim2006 non athletic guys age badly too. People keep forgetting that dirk was pretty athletic when he came into the nba. We see the trend of long lasting players and its always the athletic players that doesnt rely on their athleticism or developed their game to not overly rely on it. Kareem was athletic but didnt rely on his athleticism, vince carter is super athletic but changed his game to not rely on his athleticism, kg jkidd kobe etc are all like that. There are some exceptions true but most of them are athletic players who still relied in their athletic abilities. The only "non athletic" player i can think of that had crazy longevity was john stockton. And lets be honest dirk played 5 seasons too many. He shouldve retired with tim and kg. Let's keep in mind that Olajuwon played against Shaq, Ewing, Robinson, Kareem, Smits while Embiid played against Drummond, Jokic, KAT, Aldridge, Gobert. Obviously Embiid is immensely talented but he's not on Hakeem's level. The dream dominated the NBA in an era with legit world class centers where post play was prominent. Embiid is going up against significantly weaker opposition in the paint (with the exception of Jokic) Not saying he wouldn't be playing well in the 80's/90's but he doesn't warrant a comparison in terms of dominance with arguably the GOAT center that is Olajuwon.

That’s not wisemens game. Not everyone has to be an iso post scorer. Theres very few of those in nba history. There’s more than one archetype of bigman. He fits more of the bam Adebayo, Dwight Howard,. Tyson chandler type of mold. Defense, rebounding, athleticism, learn one or two simple moves, and have a secondary skill. In his case, it’s his shooting. He will likely be a prototype 2way stretch finisher. A lot of pnr, dump of passes to him sealing defenders, running in transition for easy buckets, lobs, putpacks, and the occasion post touch to whatever his simple but effective go to move is. If he’s not an above average post scorer now, he’s never likely to be. He just needs to perfect his current game, and model his game after someone elite who plays like him rather than force the action to be something he’s not.

@@TheIcemanthomas Ya lost me at defense. Looked lost out there more than half the time. Granted he was 19 starting the season and barely played college basketball but still, we can only hope he gets better on the defensive end as he gets more experience. The thing is, HE doesn't even know what he plays like, he can become abd model his game after anybody since he's so young and probably still getting used to his body and the speed of the NBA game. I'm just saying, the best route for him to go down is Embiid's since he's arguably the best center in the game RIGHT NOW and is "someone elite" like you mentioned, offensively and defensively. He's taller than Bam, Dwight and Chandler at 7'1, he definitely doesn't fit in that category. Plus he could be more than them. Howard and Chandler don't have a jump shot and I'm pretty sure he hit more threes than them combined in his rookie season. Bam is clearly just not the player he'd end up playing like.

@@ohyeahitsthatoneguy I think u need to listen to the thinking basketball podcast. They had a great discussion on the types of centers and how they impact the game. It’s way too late in the game for him to still be trying to model his game after someone. And I’m speaking more on potential on defense. BecauSe his profile fits that of a defensive stud. He’s just hasn’t had much high level competitive play considering he opted out of his college season after a few games. He’s essentially fresh out of high school. A lot of raw talent. The nba is the place to develop you game that already has a base, and add to that foundation not build the foundation itself. Those types of prospects rarely ever work out. I think his best bet based on his current profile is more STAT than embiid. U don’t just relocate that style of play. That’s natural talent. U can’t teach what embiid does.

Do you see how ESPN patronizes the Sixers. We beat the Wizards yesterday, the same Wizards ESPN raved about for the last 5 weeks of the season. Tobi goes off, Embiid on the recieving end of 2 horrible fouls calls that let him on the bench, Ben Simmons Playoff career high in assist, George Hill clutch and they not once talked about it on any of their stations. When they do its a gloom quick post about The Wizards losing and not about the sixers winning. Then you post some old Docu on Embiid on KZbin. This money hungry driven NBA/Media Bias against the Sixers has got to Stop. We know they will do everything to keep the Sixers from winning a championship with players we tanked to get. KNOCK IT OFF!

Embiid is the best player in basketball!! I'm not talking about accomplishments or rings, I'm talking about having NO weaknesses in his game!! There are players who are better in individual aspects of the game but Embiid has a counter move for any defense AND he gives it up defensively as well. He's now 27 years old with a son, has a championship coach who holds him accountable and just needed time to grow up as a man FIRST then as a player. Of course health plays a big part with him but I believe he's grown into his man body and will hold up. He ain't the only superstar who goes on the shelf for stretches. I love Joel Embiid and I believe he will deliver several championships to our city.

Golden Age of centers was like 1986-1998. Hakeem, Robinson, Shaq, Mutumbo, Ewing, Mourning, Parish, Moses Malone, Daugherty, Smits, Sabonis. Parish and malone were a bit long in the tooth even by 1990 but they were still pretty good. I heard Sabonis was something pretty special in his prime - he didn't get to the NBA until late in his career.

He scores with such ease and you can’t force him to be one dimensional because he shoots a respectable 3 ball, has the post moves, hits jumpers, and smart enough to beat the double team too. As talented as you are gonna get a big but again as usual men of this size, it’s always about durability, moving all that weight around isn’t easy which is why injuries have plagued him, but I hope he stays fit because the NBA is absolutely entertaining and better when he’s fit. He’s got an old school mentality with modern day skills.

You can thank Doc for getting after him regarding his conditioning and diet. Embiid's always had the talent but never had anyone in the league push him before Doc showed up. Look back at previous post-season games, you'll see him stumbling down the court, utterly gassed after 10-12min of playtime - NOW he's able to persevere, play through full quarters without blowing like a busted bellows. That's 100% Doc Rivers' input... Next up is some roster swaps and we might actually see them in the Finals

What I've started to realize is that Embiid is an average post up player, he's just capable of playing isolation in the post, there's a differece. He's as big as Shaq but he plays all the Kobe moves. He sizes opponents up for a while and then decide what move he's going to use, that's great for one on one but not too great for team basketball.
