@bongo155 Which is why it's very important that they get it right, which is why it IS ridiculous that they called it out when it was so clearly in. Even with a 40 year old grainy footage... it is absolutely clear that McEnroe was correct on both calls. The umpire was incompetent and had an agenda. It is absolute justice that he went on to win this match in straight sets and eventually the 1981 tournament!

It does not matter whether he was good or wrong ! What matters was his attitude towards unfairness and adversity. Take it as a man and move forward ! His attitude was wrong ! We are not God, we cannot control all the ins and outs of everything. Rather than focusing on something he could have never changed, he should have focused on the next point.

@@jean-bricerougeot6761 I totally agree. I think it was on the line, you could see the chalk, and also, he shouldn't have thrown a tantrum. At best, it was too close to call, at worst he was flat out on the wrong side. Either way, he should've behaved himself.

@Username We are not talking about fighting for freedom, moral, values or democracy here. Let's not mix up meaningless things with meaningful ones. Moral, values and ethics are immovable, there's no arguing about that. And we have the duty to stand for those, so that the nations do not collapse. Here we are talking about an isolated event without any impact on the history of the world. Not arguing about If a player insults a referee pretending the ball is in, it's wrong for multiple reasons: - The player could be wrong, his eyes could deceive him as much as the referee's eyes. - Insulting the referee or trying to put pressure on him is bad. The referee is impartial, he does his best. He only has less than 1 second to decide whether a ball is in or out. And we all know a referee cannot go back on his words after the call has been made. Altogether, it's a waste of energy and puts the player arguing in the wrong state of mind for the rest of the match. The best players in the world very rarely discuss points with the umpire and if they do, they move on very quickly ! and that's why they are the best ! A good player is wise enough to understand a tennis match can't be perfect, there could be mistakes in favour of your opponent or in your favour.

@@jean-bricerougeot6761 From my perspective, the issue is _why_ were these _blatantly erroneous_ calls being made? Multiple calls, mind you. In such a situation, one has to at least entertain the idea of (deliberate) unfairness -- it happens -- and in such a case, one not only has the right to speak up, but it's entirely understandable why one _would._ Should one make any kind of personal remarks? Of course not. But we don't always act the way we should when we're legitimately angry. While I can say that McEnroe _should_ have restrained himself verbally, I don't think that his behavior came anywhere close to approaching anything that I would consider shameful or "cringeworthy".

HOWEVER this doesnt make these behaviour right and thats all i said. no he isnt right raging like that. also i would argue this guy got a bit too emotional couple of times and not just a few times. idc too much about it but when he loses a match due to it its his fault and he isnt "right". second, how about you stop complaining? or OP does? what kind of argument is this. a guy says he is right when he rages like that, i disagree. end of story. dont tell me to stop talking when you are doing the same

What's interesting about McEnroe, is that he was a tremendous talent, though his meltdowns sort of overshadowed that. No one talks about the fact that in just one season he had an 82-3 match record, and won Wimbledon and the US Open, as well as 11 other titles. That's absolutely sick. No one since had ever had that dominating of a season. But that's not what people remember. In this instance, he was 100% in the right, though he should have just shaken it off and moved on. Then again, McEnroe made mad bank over the fact that he never just 'moved on' from a bad call.

He was a colorful character, but honestly tennis players during this era kind of sucked. Mcenroe was lucky he played during an era of wooden rackets and physically weak and unathletic tennis players. If he grew up now, he'd be lucky to win a highschool state tennis tournament with his impressive tennis skills yet subpar physical capabilties (weak and slow).

Macenroe had the most unusual back swing. Must've been impossible to read. What a talent. Tennis became so boring when he retired. Until Federer came along. I always thought an Australian player at the end of his career would step over the net one day and sort Macenroe out. It never happened. But Macenroe was the tennis genius we all loved to hate.

McEnroe was correct in his first complaint, the ball clearly hit the chalk. The question is, why did I continue watching the next five minutes of this, total waste of time.

because the reaql reason he complained was because after he accepted the chalk bad call, one of the next few serves was very long, and it wasnt called. so he had two points go against him which were pretty easy to see...and he was rightfully pissed about it.

Remember watching tennis back then, as well as other sports. A different era where there was a passion for the game. Today Sports has become such a business, whose main concern is how to produce more money. The passion McEnroe shows here is what sports is about and what people remember. The human aspect of what we see here is epic and reminds us of what Sports is missing today.

This was in the early '80s when the video pales in comparison to HD these days...but you could CLEARLY SEE A HUGE PLUME OF CHALK (relatively speaking) after that serve.. This was a brutal call and McEnroe was right on this one.. Shows why you can't have senior citizens (who presumably don't have 20/20 eyesight) manning the chair..
