The ND story is America’s story - from humble beginnings immigrants and faith pulled a school up by its bootstraps to become a success. The school continues to uphold academic standards and tradition despite the difficulties that brings to athletic recruiting. Anyone who choses to hate does so out of either ignorance or a rejection of the capitalist and free market traditions of this country.
@michaell.masciocchi798811 ай бұрын
A tradition like no other in sports. whether we are 22-0 or 0-12. everyone wants to beat the Irish. As Ara always said, ND is a bowl game on everybody's schedule. No other institution plays with the combination of spotlight, pressure, expectation and without unlimited resources. This is what makes playing for the Lady on the Dome unique.

ND holds a very special place in my heart. When they invited my grandfather to teach in 1948, it paved the way for my mother's entire family to emigrate to this country after WWII. Glad they brought up the Big Tens refusal to let ND in. All these years later and they’re whining that Notre Dame isn’t a member. You blew it. Get over yourself. Notre Dame might join a conference eventually but it sure won’t be the Big Ten. Biggest fumble in college football history
@wingedbuffalo46702 ай бұрын
Never say never @JoeMama. ND is already a Big 10 member for ice hockey. I'd be willng to bet that, IF the Big 10 (or the Big 30 if that's what it eventually becomes) were willing to make certain concessions to ND, we would consider joining. It makes geographic sense with somewhat less travel (especially for the other sports) after all ... but the more the Conference spreads coast-to-coast, the more it blunts the geographic advantage. These are the "concessions" I have in mind: 1. ND is a "full member" in ALL sports EXCEPT football (similar to the ACC arrangement) ... OR -- 2. ND becomes a "full member" in all sports, including football, BECAUSE ND convinces the Big 10 to change its conference scheduling model foer football: a) the number of "conference games" get scaled back to 8 games instead of the recent expansion to 9 b) at 8 conference games, every conference team gets 4 home, 4 away conference games every season c) each team gets to designate 4 "historical rivals" that will be on each other's schedule EVERY year (rotating home/away games) For example, ND might pick: USC, Michigan, Ohio State, and either Michigan State or Penn State, or in-state rivals Purdue or Indiana (and, for example, USC might pick ND, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon; Michigan might pick Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, and ND, etc.) d) after those 4 "perpetual" football opponents are designated for scheduling, every team can select 4 other "frequent" opponents -- two of which are guaranteed to be placed on the schedule every two years rotationally following the completion of home-and-home contests in successive years (such that it trakes 4 years to run through all 4 "frequent opponent" teams -- two 2 year cycles of playing 2 of thee teams. In ND's case for example, if ND had selected Penn State as its 4th perpetual rival, then it could easily designate Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, and Northwestern as its "frequent teams" such that we'd play the first two teams in the first two years of the 4 year cycle, and the second two during the 3rd and 4th years of the 4 year cycle before resuming withthe first two treams in a new 4 year cycle. This paradigm now accounts for 6 Big 10 games in every given season (4 perpetual opponents plus 2 of 4 frequent opponents) e) the final 2 of 8 "Big 10" conference games in any given season results from 2 randomly selected of the remaining conference teams to be selected for two year home-and-home rotations until all confererce member schools have been played. f) the 4 non-conference games of a 12 game regular season schedule are up to each team to schedule. In ND's case, we might opt to schedule Navy (honor game of tradition), an SEC team, an ACC team, a west coast team in years where we aren't playing at USC and/or aren't scheduled to play a "leftover member" game at Washington or at Oregon. No need to "preserve space" on the schedule for USC sincce they would be a perpetual now-"conference" opponent every year. The final opponent on the schedule could be a credible, yet not overly tough opponent. g) as a full conference member, ND is eligible for the Big 10 Championship game (13th game) prior to any playoffs, has access to all Big 10 bowl tie-ins, and gets an equal share in the massive pot of TV and bowl $$$$$$$. "IF" all that happened, I could see ND potentially joining the Big 10 -- but it's a way off.

I’m from Indiana, been an Irish fan my whole life. I also lived in South Bend for a while after college. Been to plenty of games. People ask me all the time why it’s so special. I tell them, if you’ve never been there it’s hard to understand. It’s cliche for sure, but when you walk in that stadium, you can feel the history. There’s no lights in the concourse,which reminds you how old the stadium it. The stadium itself is not always comfortable. The seats are old, and it is kinda cramped. That said, it’s like walking into Yankee Stadium or Wrigley Field and seeing the field. It’s not the loudest stadium in the country, although that’s gotten to better in recent years, but it is the best game day atmosphere in the country.
