Didier Deschamps deserves credit for his bravery which yielded 3-3 tie from almost lost match 2-0. He had to withdraw Giroud to unlock Mbappe centrally. It was the only way to rescue a match already down 2-0. Giroud was there to hold the ball but there was no chance of doing that because FRA were not even getting view of the ball, FRA were chasing till Giroud was on the field. Marcus Thuram inplace of Dembele brought better defending/tracking back on the wings back into play and now FRA were playing ball inplace of chasing it. BRAVO Didier Deschamps.

mbappe only played centrally for 20-ish minutes, he moved back out left for the last 15 minutes of the game and extra time (scored all his goals playing from the left) so Giroud playing central wouldn’t of impacted that.

Through out the World Cup Dembele was asked to sit deep and help the defence while Griezman took his spot to build the attack. Dembele was subbed off after 40 minutes. He didn't get the chance to create something more in the second half. Argentina mostly had the ball, not a single french player was good until the 80. minute. Kolo muani only won a penalty after a big error from Otamendi. Apart from this he wasn't good and missing the biggest chance of the tournament actually proves my point. Deschamps did Dembele dirty, he could have produce so much more. Griezmann should've been subbed off instead of Dembele and Camavinga should've start instead of Rabiot.

Not a single player in the French defense and midfield was able to get the ball through ARG's midfield, and NONE of the French attackers were getting sprung onto effective touches until the DiMaria substitution. Giroud has been past his sell-by date for years, never was especially great, and Dembele has never been anything but a decoy runner to keep the side of the defense not in front of Mbappe honest. Nobody inside the game saw anything from either player yesterday that wasn't apparent even before 2018 when they won it all.

@@faustosar6151 Yea the French guy got his penalty basically the same way. Got touches and stared falling right then knowing the slowing of his motion would cause some part of their legs to touch and sure enough they did. In the case of Di Maria you can see a clear trip as one leg was swept behind the other by the touch. In the French case the guy was acting quite a bit. If he had wanted to stay up I bet he could have. It was the flop that caused the collision. What I will say is that the real foul occured when the Argentina player grabbed his shoulder and pulled. So I'm good with both penalties.

Dembele didn't have a good game, but why blame him for problems with the French defense.. he's a winger/striker. He doesn't play the right back position for France. Two bad situations happened when he tried to provide help in the defense(right back), but who was the French player playing that right back position? Giroud only plays well in the box, and because Griezmann was neutralized in the midfield and made a nonfactor in that game, Giroud was automatically neutralized as well. Dembele is a player that's runs well and does a great job with counter-attact. Because nothing was happening in the midfield, he gad to drop and help in the defense.. unfortunately, things didn't go well for him. Dembele had a great game playing all the previous games. before the finals. We can't blame him for what happened in the finals

HUGE mistake subbing Giroud so early. I appreciate that he doesn't have an intense 90 minutes in him but he is a dynamic player that France simply subbed too early.

Honestly I didn't see the early subbing to have made any real difference for France. It was basically all Argentina until France got those two quick goals in succession which has more to do with Argentina getting tired. Argentina waited too long to sub. Maybe it gave France a bit fresher legs but they could have done that at minute 60 or 70 and gotten the same result and perhaps better legs in OT. If you watch the game in the second half Argentina wasn't high pressing as much but most of the possession France had was the unimportant kind. So I agree I think the early subs were pointless. We will never know what Giroud would have provided in the early parts of the second half.

You know in icehockey they remove one player during extra time. So it gives them a bit more space on the ice to play and it's pretty exciting to watch, cause it opens up the game and it's chance after chance in both ends. You could do that in football too. One player the first15, and then another one, and keep going until someone scores a goal instead of deciding the world cup on penalties. It's not like they don't get enough subs these days. In fact they should get rid of penalties altogether. They've become way to decisive. Some random ball hits a hand and that becomes the deciding moment in a game. That's hardly in the spirit of the game. The punishment should fit the crime. Make it all indirect free kicks. Still a good chance that and a 100 times more entertaining to watch.

@@LightSideOfBS There is no ball. It's a puck. The skill level you need to be on to play hockey is insane. You try and watch one player and follow him around on the ice and see how skilled they actually are. I'm not a hockey player myself by the way, and this wasn't about hockey, but how to improve football, and maybe make it less frustrating and more entertaining to watch.
