It's easier to fix a win lose game than it is to fake an accurate score, which has better ROI. That's when you see defenders leaving wide gaps, tapped in side footed rolled shots, which any goalkeeper could save, and yet lets them in. From what I saw of the match yesterday the only happy English players were the ones who received extra funds in their bank accounts.

I still believe that the English players have the ability to play like Spain. Each of those players can play one touch football. But Southgate's tactics and way of playing does not allow them to express that feature. After England equalized Southgate was playing Saka at right wing back and Foden at left wing back. England dominate possession in most matches they play. But the difference between them and Spain is Spain possess with purpose and their players are constantly moving off the ball to manipulate space and create numerical overloads up and down the field. The English are much better at possessing the ball than in past generations. But they are still too mechanical and look like they are thinking while possessing. With Spain, it’s much more natural, fluid, and progressive. England are getting there but their players need to improve their off the ball IQ much more to understand space and how to manipulate it.

The reality is that Southgate has been the luckiest coach in the world. He has a bunch of talents who on paper are better than any country in the world, and he managed to make them look and play badly, with no tactics to play on the strength of those talents.....YET he managed to churn out results in 2 Euro and 1 World Cup (Beside 1966 WC, no other England manager can get the results which Southgate managed to achieve for the past 50 years). So FA is so pleased and decided to ask Southgate to lead England in 2026 WC.
