I played against him at the National Championships in 1989 in Coffs Harbour. He was playing for Victoria and I was playing for Western Australia. One night I went out with some of the Victorian boys that were staying in the same house as me and I met him and lost $5 playing darts against him if I recall correctly. I remember he was big, strong and skillful back then. He was like a giant compared to the rest of us. We would have both been only 14 years old.

Grew up supporting South Melbourne, and with Viduka being a star player for Melbourne Knights, (our biggest rival during that era), I got to see a lot of him. To this day, I still am absolutely adamant that he was the best home grown talent that I have ever seen in our country. 18 years old and absolutely tearing apart the old NSL. His touch, control, strength, and finishing ability was class to say the least. What a player he was and it was a privilege to have seen him in his prime.

The game has changed since their day. Nowadays 433 reigns supreme and a center forward must be able to contribute to the build up play by linking up with the wide forwards and midfielders. Gone are the days of two man strike forces where one can drop deep while the other stays up top to latch onto a long ball from deep.

@anthonyowolabi
@anthonyowolabi 4 жыл бұрын
@@ElectricSoulShow Yes true, no real pace but those are actually my favourite types of players - Le Tiss, Bergkamp, Berbatov, Viduka. That Leeds team would have won at least a title if they played in this recent era just like Leicester. I also enjoyed watching the futuristic Villa team in the late 90s with the 3-5-2 formation, topping the league by christmas twice only to fall of the map by april / may. Those were the best times!

@@Juventud2222 Some have, but I agree it sadly hasn't been enough. I think most Aussie football fans agree but none of us have the voice/platform to make it known that change is needed. Therefore it is down to the players to continually put pressure on the people at the top to make changes to the way the game is run. Its all well and good making a few comments in the odd interview but realistically that isnt going to change anything.

Although he is only 3-4 years older than me, I watched him as a kid in the NSL at the age of 17 and 18. I think he was 17 when he made his debut and scored twice against Preston Macedonia. My cousin played with him at Melbourne Croatia juniors and he was a monster even as a 16 year old. Although not a well-spoken gentleman, he still knows how to get the message across with honesty and says it the way it was. Such as shame football in Australia has not called any of these legends to help run the game. Thank you for the interview just a shame it wasn't longer.
