Stevie, not sure what you've been watching, but Berhalter's been trash for 5.5 years. Seb's right, he pulls the fire alarm at half-time, goes to some ridiculous 5-in-the-back setup, taking Gio off for CCV. Berhalter's been rigidly playing a 4-3-3 against all-comers for 5.5years, so the players have no experience playing this 5-in-the back. That's on Berhalter, not the players. GGG was fired from the Swedish 2nd Division for lack of offense. What have we seen from the USMNT under him - lack of offense. He was a middling MLS coach. The players and the fans deserve better.

People resorting to the typical "should have done what would have worked." The truth is no matter what he did in the game, all people care about was the end result. The manager may not be having the best time recently, but you can't blame him for these results. Individual mistakes and lack of talent is what got them knocked out. Whether or not he gets sacked depends on who is available. Some people think they want anything else and before you know it, we have a revolving door of managers circus. Typical occurrence in teams that think they are better than they are. Scapegoat the manager and stroke the ego of players.
@vex355u_fan
@vex355u_fan 2 ай бұрын
@@turkeydano2106 why can't he be blamed for the results? If the outcome of a match is solely determined by the players, then why bother paying a manager $2.2M/year? Not-withstanding how bad Berhalter's been, national team coaches rarely get 2 cycles. Why was he rehired after the "exhaustive search" after his first contract ended? Your "The manager may not be having the best time recently" is laughable. He has NEVER had "good times". Sacked from second division Swedish division. Barely had a level record in MLS. Fails into the USMNT coaching gig because his brother handed him the job. But yeah, sure, it's not his fault. We should keep him for the next 20 years.

I don't think Stevie cares one bit, the point he makes is that maybe they don't have success because they aren't that good. Sometimes you have to realize that you are a frog in a well in concacaf, but until you have real talent you aren't ready to compete with the best yet. Is it really the manager holding them back? Will things actually change if the managers changes? I suspect not. He has no magical wand to make players perform better, he is picking probably the best players and putting them in their positions. I don't know how deep the tactics go, but they were competitive at the world cup under him and have been qualifying consistently. If they could get a top tier manager with more experience then sure, have a go, but otherwise you are just throwing people in a fire that will never go out.

It amazes me that the USA has never had a South American coach. They have gone for Europeans or locals Anglo coaches. Considering they play against Latin teams, you’d think that at one stage they would have thought about having an Argentinian or Brazilian coach. A South American coach would not be a good fit for the US national team. South American coaches thrive on players with individual skill and savviness, the US don't not have that type player that South American coaches are looking for in their players, and the players wouldn't respond well to the coaches either, totally different mentality. The US is and has always been much more eurocentric in their approach to the game. Their playing style is much more aligned with the Northern European style of play. The US needs to find a qualified European coach, who can bring out the most in these players. American coaches are not qualified to coach in the national team level, they are MLS level coaches, what the US needs is a qualified European coach.

I’ll give you that Klinsmann helped US soccer immensely with getting players who could’ve played for Euro teams to play for the US. But, this generation of players has no heart, guts, grit. Klinmanns played with and coached with passion and love. This team has none of that. Think of 2002 team. They had no business getting to quarterfinals on talent. They did it with grit. This team needs a coach like Herb Brooks was for USA hockey. Somebody to tell their gen-z, millennial entitled butts that they don’t have enough talent to win on talent alone. Someone who won’t care if Daddy is high up in USSF. Someone who will drive them hard in camps, push them every second, and create a mindset of “it doesn’t matter how you can hit. It’s how you can get hit and keep forward”(Rocky Balboa). Until then US soccer, youth to national level, will always just be meh.

No manager should stay more than one cycle for the US. Klinsmann got lucky in 2006 with Germany (host country, future world cup winner Löw as an assistant coach). He said he would turn us into one of the more possession oriented teams, then we have some of the most defensive tactics in Brazil. Lucky for him, Belgium didn’t win 5-0. He lost to Jamaica in the semi’s of the Gold Cup, which should have been his last game (Bradley was fired for losing the final). Then Klinsmann put us in such bad qualifying position for the WC, we couldn’t qualify. T&T loss was bad, but it should have never come down to that game as a do-or-die for only the 4th place spot.

Against Panama, Berhalter decided to play a low-block for the entire second half, taking off Gio Reyna -- the one really creative and best passing player on the team -- for an extra center back at home against Panama, inviting Panama to attack. He also took off Balogun for Pepi, further limiting our counter-attacking threat that would have kept Panama honest, who after losing against Uruguay might have not been so eager to push numbers forward to win and risk getting burned on a counter-attack, losing, and thus being eliminated from the tournament altogether. That tactical idiocy and cowardice has defined Berhalter's 5 years in charge. So absolutely Berhalter is culpable. I know the non-Americans of ESPN FC hate the hype for the USMNT, but this squad's potential is unknown, but under Berhalter, they are definitely far less than the sum of the parts. That has been clear for years. If we were a serious footballing nation, we would have never hired him in the first place, never rehired him, and immediately fired him after getting grouped and not be debating it now.

Adalberto Carrasquilla is one of Panama's best players and incidentally was the guy who got a red card on Pulisic. He is club teammates with Griffin Dorsey both starting on a relatively middling MLS team, and they are roughly equivalent as players at different positions and are the same age. Griffin Dorsey has zero caps for the USMNT. None. The USMNT should beat Panama at home by multiple goals, and, quite frankly if playing well, should already be ahead by the time Weah picked up his red card. I agree with Seb that AR is one of the top tier of LBs in the EPL. Your counterpoint of facts/stats proves this. Honestly, I only see him play twice a season when Fulham play Liverpool, because LFC are the club I chose to follow years ago. AR plays well vs LFC from what I can remember overall. In fact in one of the matches last season I was very impressed with how he played considering LFC's attacking players he had to defend against. He made multiple interceptions that match and provided some attack down the flank. Consider the season Pulisic had for AC Milan and I'd have to say him and AR are the 2 best consistent players for the US.

They also don’t find people off the street that don’t have anything and are poor. They have academies for the rich to get their sons in. That’s why they suck. @@Brazil520 It works both ways. A manager's job is to put his players in the best positions to help them be successful and it's the players' responsibility to make sure they do their jobs properly. In this case, both sides are to blame. Berhalter is not a good coach. They lack discipline under him, which is why they've had 3 red cards in the past year that cost them matches. The fact that the USSF gave weight to the players saying they wanted Berhalter back was a giant red flag for why he shouldn't have been brought back. They weren't really making progress under him the first go, so that shows the players just wanted what they knew and feared change when change was needed. I do think this squad of US players has a bit of an entitlement attitude because they lack grit and heart when it matters, but Berhalter was not the manager to wake them out of their stupor and get them to playing to the best of their abilities.

There is still heaps of talent here, folks, so let's not lose faith. Finally, some positives to take away from this Copa: Scally is a capable RB and held his own. Balogun is awesome. Pulisic is better than ever and now even gets angry. 6 of Panama's star players were out due to injury, so the USMNT could not beat Panama's B team, something they should be able to do 3 men down if they are as good as they think they are.

When Dan asked Seb which US player plays at world class level, he got defensive. Truth is the best athletes in America don’t play soccer partially because the youth programs are not cheap (which excludes potential talents) and also because the best athletes might want to play in the more popular NFL or NBA. This generation is good by US standards but not by World football standards.

The idea that the best athletes in America play NFL or NBA largely conflates the athlete pool. Soccer players are significantly shorter than football and basketball players. You might have an argument that these athletes are playing other sports in middle school, high school, and college, but I think it's a massive oversimplification. They certainly aren't going to the NFL and NBA. I think the better argument is that we have too many options for sports for kids who often end up playing a multitude of different sports through out the year rather than dedicating themselves to soccer and when they have to choose, they're often times giving up on soccer.

Is not about producing the best athletes. Is about producing the best soccer players and developing a style. Currently, the use is using speed and physicality to win against weaker competition but cannot compete against teams that although may lack in physicality, produce better soccer players.

To Sebi’s point, Berhalter’s immediate decision was to move Gio to right wingback, going into a back three on the fly, and not having a ready outlet on winning possession. Be that as it may, he then subs out Gio at the half, neutering the US’s best attacking set up

Absolutely everyone in the entire US soccer ecosystems to blame. That’s your full stop. Of course it’s the players job to deliver on the pitch and of course it’s a soccer Federation’s job to put the right staff in place. And ultimately, it’s the coaches job to build the culture, apply the tactics, and still the right attitude. We lost because the ladder was substandard - all of that is the responsibility of the coach and coaching staff hence why that is the domino that must fall.
