Some people do it differently, but the original Oklahoma drill from the University of Oklahoma is where there's an o-lineman vs. a d-lineman, a ball carrier and then a linebacker who usually lays the hit.
@Nonpeon8 жыл бұрын
I just watched the LSU hit drills, and man those LSU boys are much bigger and meaner than UCLAs version. Doesn't mean UCLa wouldn't win a game against them, but there's a big personnel difference.

As a former cornerback, I hated this drill. I would always get paired up against guys 20lbs heavier than me, so I was at a huge disadvantage. Also, it was always against an offensive player, who played off the whistle. Corners reacted to the receiver, and off a backpeddle. When did you ever play with your hand on the ground? We always practiced backpeddling, and then breaking on the ball off that backpeddle. But it did make us tougher, and gave us some measure of confidence that we could at least not collapse when a fullback, tight end or lineman came at us.
@gavynklein19089 жыл бұрын
yeah, the actual drill is more for backers and linemen or easier for them atleast

@OnlyOneSoonerNation18 жыл бұрын
Actually it's pretty close. And there isn't a certain way to do the Oklahoma drill. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_drill "The Oklahoma drill has several variations. The most common involves two players lined up three yards opposite one another. A corridor is set up typically using three blocking bags on each side of the players lined up top to bottom to create a wall, and the walls are spaced about one yard apart. This creates an area of about three feet by nine feet. The two players, at the sound of the whistle, then run at one another and the drill is over when one of the players is on the ground, or if a ball carrier is involved when he is tackled. If a player is able to drive the other player out of the corridor, that also ends the drill."

Yeah, only a few stood out. Blue went ape shit for their guy that came off the line face down with his head nearly in the dirt. O-line should have just layed on him, easy block, but the drill is about hit, drive, and leverage while in the upright drive position. Honestly this drill is pointless when it comes to defensive translation to the field. Defense should never be fooling around with a blocker minimally, they should be rushing pass or finding the ball carrier.

No, there is definetly a linebacker in the Oklahoma drill, otherwise you could call it whatever you wanted. It's the particular setup, ball carrier/o-lineman/d-lineman/linebacker that makes it the oklahoma drill. anything else just shouldn't be called oklahoma drill.

The whole point of this drill is to make contact, lock in your hands, and keep driving your feet. Not trying to turn the person so you can purposely make them fall over. Only some of these boys got it right.
@cheswick617 Жыл бұрын
BS...No the entire point is to beat the person in front of you...PERIOD. You do what you have to do because not all are the same size. a smaller guy gets lower, tries to beat the opponent off the whistle...A bigger guy tries to square up...& drive the smaller guy off the line. It's BEAT THE OPPONENT...not who looks better.

In the PAC 12 we literally kill each other just to be top ranked in our division Im just waiting for one SEC team to challenge a PAC 12 team they're have been offers but i guess no one from the SEC wanted to take them

Honestly this drill is pointless when it comes to defensive translation to the field. Defense should be sheding the block, rushing pass or finding the ball carrier. The drill is beautiful when the ball carrier is involved, also one of the best learning and reading drills there is. Teams should just break down in groups of 3 and do this for conditioning like they're running sprints twice a week at the end of practice.

Actually, I don't remember the last time a PAC-12 school beat ANY SEC school. All I remember is Oregon getting that ass whooped by Auburn and LSU because they're the only school that is good enough to even face an SEC school. Again, academics are held to a nationwide requirement. And just so you know, Vanderbilt is the top mathematics school in the nation, and their football team would walk all over Oregon or Stanford or USC or whoever else. Have a nice day!!
