Everything about that last drive is the result of poor coaching. Every player not knowing the 3rd down play, players not lining up quickly, and not using the timeout when you realize it’s moving too slow. I'm a Lions fan happy to be on the other side of this stuff for once but I can kinda see what happened here: Earlier that same drive Eberflus calls a TO when he didn't have to. Williams gets the snap at exactly 0 (play clock, with the extra tick all teams get). Williams is clearly heated over it. I'm sure some form of "I have this under control" is said by Williams. Later, Williams takes the sack and you habe two options. 1) Burn the TO now, run a play for FG range and run the FG unit on 2) Save the TO, run a play for FG range and burn the TO for the FG unit to tie it up Two options...and Williams has it under control...until it's clear he doesn't...and by the time that's clear to Eberflus it's too late to burn it. If you're gonna use it pre-play it has to be about 20 seconds MINIMUM. At 20 seconds you are tying that last TO to AFTER the play (in their minds). Sack happens around 36 seconds and they don't snap the ball until about 8 th seconds because Williams is making checks like it's the 3rd Q. Both people (HC and QB) thought the other had it under control when nobody had it under control, lol.
