Zhongli also does other things really well though, like cc and even a decent amount of damage, so I doubt he would ever be completely replaceable. Diona's kinda similar, she has decent healing to make up for a slightly less bulky shield

@@schatziko7081 agreed but I think Kirara is better for Nilou's Superbloom team than Burgeon because having two shielders in a team can be unecessary especially since different shields don't stack. Better give that slot to a healer and/or an element applicator you need most.

Also, kirara has an 8s cooldown and 12s duration, which means that she can get 2 shields in one team rotation, while all others can only get 1. That's also very important to keep in mind and makes her shielding capability exceptionally strong.

Thoma in burgeon is no shielder on EM build and adding a shielder is a very good option. Like, Noelle is great driver here, for many reasons, besides survivability - geo helps with reactions extinguishing burning but leaving dendro, then, Noelle's AoE fits burgeon AoE and - with fav she helps with energy a lot. Not popular, cause people understand little about reactions, many still don't even realize how cryo is great for dendro, so no surprise they don't even think about geo.

@@froeloe i will quote someone's explanation on reddit, as i found it useful when making this video: Thoma’s shield works by using his E and Q together to continually stack his shield. Both of his abilities (skill and burst) allow him to continually stack his shield which makes it get stronger and each stack resets the duration of his shield to 8s. Allowing him to have it up all the time with enough ER. For example let’s say you have a 30k HP Thoma with with lvl 12 talents for both E and Q. His E (skill) will give him a 6094 base hp shield. While his maximum amount of shield he can have with this hp and talent level will be 16,589 HP. (His E also determines the maximum amount of hp his shield can have) To reach that amount of shield hp you want to tie in his Q (burst). Every fiery collapse he shoots out will add on to his existing E shield. His Q with the same 30k max hp Thoma with lvl 12 talents will get: 969 shield hp per collapse. During his burst (Q) he will continually gain 969 shield hp every fiery collapse that he shoots out and will add on to your shields existing hp.

@@matchayum23 Unless you're using Thoma on-field (why tho), Bolide does nothing as it only applies to the wearer. Without C4 it's best to use 2pc ER/HP, ER/HP/HP mainstats, R5 Kitain Cross Spear. Depending on ER substat luck and whether Thoma has Pyro/Favonius teammates, he could swap some ER for more HP.

@@matchayum23 Not really the 2pcs, but moreso Shield Strength itself DOES NOT get shared to teammates. Unless they're like Layla's shield, in which the stars increase shield strength to the "Active Character", so the shield strength buff can just be transferred around when switching. If you give a 2pc shield strength artifact to a character, only THAT character gets the shield strength boost, no one else from the team gets it.

If you didn't know, Collei is not that great not because she is bad dendro applicator, but because she doesn't do anything else. So if Kirara with her good shield can also apply as much dendro as Collei, that makes her broken. Pov: you tried to roast Kirara but doesn't know anything about the game, lmao

Interesting video. I am someone who enjoys having a shielder in my team if possible. Each of the characters excels in something, the true worth of the character is not simply the durability of the shield. Some offer other benefits like healing like Diona . What makes Layla special within the 4-stars is that her shield has 100% uptime if not broken. I also pick my shielder to match the element of the target when possible for extra durance. Still, for me the most important thing about shields is not the damage block, but the stability. Not having attacks interrupted makes a big difference. Thanks for a fun watch!

But what's good about her is the fact that she can fill every support role in the game, with sheild, heal, cryo aplication, stamina redution, EM at C6, HECK EVEN MOVEMENT SPD! I've used her ever since I got her, She will probably be my favourite character forever :)

But overall she's amazing against asshole raid bosses like azdaha for characters like the bow users or even melee that have to be stupidly upclose to his a$$. Zhongli just straight up never goes down. His C2 gives party shield in co-op and can set up 2 pillars iirc in c1. Thoma works for pyro teams and his c6 is very useful overall. He can also use raiden's spear to help him out with ER. Xingqiu does interruption resist + hydro application + damage and reactions. Yelan is straight up damage. Kirara is fantastic in dendro teams such as nilou to help you survive and apply dendro which this team also uses kokomi/barbara. So you don't need diona's pitiful healing or movement speed gain unless it's for overworld traveling but even then I'd rather give childe my Lyney bow and call it a day. Can add rosaria and/or dehya into the team for more movement speed. Qiqi with sac fragments or an ER sword can apply cryo on top of her healing and utilizing clam set in a freeze team/any team who needs a cryo. Any team that uses diona can and has most likely replaced her with BETTER options. Even Barbara, who I don't like and how overpraised she is, is better.

If every shield character's role is to just shield, then they shouldn't have made any variation and just copy and paste it on every one of them then call it a day.

yeah, there is not much i can do about that, some weapons such as polearms just do not have as much HP as key. I considered some solutions such as reducing the HP of sword users through artifacts, but that could be deemed "unfair" to some, so I decided to stick to this method where all characters get their best potential.

My shield is Diona and tbh it works really well, most of the time I also use Xin Yans shield for the time between her shield ends and I can use a new one, this way I have my shield up almost all the time while playing teams with these two

The day we get a polearm Key of Khaj-Nisut with the same first passive but a secondary passive that gives ER based on x% HP. I can replace black tassel and Thoma will finally have a good balance between ER and HP (but we all know that's never gonna happen)

This would be great for a shield bot Thoma but for a burgeon Thoma EM might still be better. Another weapon that would be great as polearm for him is Baizhu's weapon (if it was a polearm). It provides HP, has an energy refund mechanic and buffs elemental damage. Would be great to fully utilize Thoma as shielder and a sub dps.

i simply gave up on thoma being a good general-purpose shielder and built him ER, HP, EM, with inazuma's craftable spear. This way, his shield is not the best (which would not be anyways) but it's definitely viable, his EM and ER are great for burgeon and to keep his gameplay loop running. Plus, the day big pyro damage sources will come, he will still be a good (very good, actually) pyro shielder even without minmaxing HP.

But yeah, Thoma is in a pretty damn good spot for Burgeon, the feeling i get is that he's a character that came out at a wrong time and possibly with wrong ideas, which ended up ruining him a bit.

Smth for Diona that should be taken into account is one of her ascension passives which reduces the attack of the enemy that was hit by her icy paws, so she technically is better in single target situations and mitigates more damage than expected

Regarding noelle and xinyan, the problem about them is that their shield scales off defense, and if we use the same set of artifacts, the shield will be tissue paper thin. So one solution would be to give a completely new set of artifacts just for her, but now that defeats the purpose of the comparison because we are no longer using the same artifact set across all characters, and there could be variance added to the comparison, such as having better rolls on the def% set compared to the hp%, which might not make the comparison fair, so i'm not really sure what to do

Honest opinion, I see shield as a "To not get staggered while attacking and dodging". . It's nice and all, but the real challenge is when any shield get hit by a combination of Pyro, Electro, Hydro, and Dendro... All at the same time. . One can plan for a mighty shield, but having those 4 element to hit you at once....

Zhongli's and Noelle's shield is the only viable one for that situation because Geo shields are effective against any type of damage while elemental shields only are very strong against the same element they have. That's why each shielder has their own role to play. Like Kirara's shield is best used for Nilou's Superbloom team because of Bloom Core damage is dendro while Thoma is best for Burgeon because Burgeon is Pyro damage.

In the case of Layla you forgot 😜 to trigger her passive that increase shield strength when the stars hit enemies. That would have performed better than no shield strength

The comparison is cool and all _but_ some of the characters there need quite some ER (e.g. Thoma) or alternative weapons (e.g. Sac. Bow for Diona) to work properly, so it's not very realistic to go HP on the weapon and Sands for all of 'em. Still, really cool comparison!

Regarding noelle, the problem about her is that her shield scales off defense, and if we use the same set of artifacts, the shield will be tissue paper thin. So one solution would be to give a completely new set of artifacts just for her, but now that defeats the purpose of the comparison because we are no longer using the same artifact set across all characters, and there could be variance added to the comparison, such as having better rolls on the def% set compared to the hp%, which might not make the comparison fair, so i'm not really sure what to do

@@N0x3w it's not about how hard it is to farm for def. It's simply that you can't make a fair compsarison for one characters that scales of def, when others scale of hp. Best you could do is canclulate def vs hp scaling and get def number that Noelle would need for her shield to be camparable with, idk, Zhongli's, and then try to get as close to that number as possible, but it's simply not worth it imo

I feel like there's a miscount on Layla's shield. By the time the left wave missiles finish, the front wave is halfway through the shield, and it looks like it only broke once the left wave finished. It looks to me like it was more like 15 or 16 hits and not the 12 proposed. You can further tell this is the case because Xingqiu gets hit around 3 times from the front missiles, not the full 6 it should've been if you were correct.

I used to play Thoma shield for my wanderer, the others are bennett and faruzan but it was annoying to keep track of the stacks, then I switched to tankfei which much more durable and skills friendly but the burst sometimes doesn't come back before cd ends + 5sec cd. Then I finally got Layla, definitely more comfortable to use than the other 2 + I get to absorb both cryo and pyro, my wanderer has almost 80cr so it's even better now

There's Normal Attack Chongyun but his playstyle doesn't exactly fit Thoma's. Thoma is already viable though as a Burgeon Igniter as long as you have Nahida and Xinqiu plus his flames doesn't steal reactions that much because of the ICD. If you're planning to make him just a shielder, I don't think he'll be good on any reaction teams that rely on Melt or Vaporize damage. You do you though if he's the only shielder you have available or you really want to play him as such.

Ik he is good as burgeon, but the thing is.. i prefer hyperbloom, and maximizing his stat is annoying.. Unlike Kuki Raiden who can go 3 EM.. he needs to go ER - EM - EM, with having to look for more ER & EM stat to maximize it.. which is why i dont do burgeon thoma.. and i dont have nahida, so.. and talking about pure shielder Thoma.. there's actually a few character that can utilize it, only if they are focusing on raw NA dmg (especially with his C6).. I'm talking about Wanderer (his only perfect fit), Yoimiya & Ayato (with no reaction)

​@@esqpur i think the best way to compare it is to take the same ammount of percentage of def as to the ammount of hp the other characters have. Let's say for example you get all HP% on the characters you are testing and (u don't factor in weapons as that can skew results) let's also say that added all together it's 158% HP added on top of their base HP. You would then get a Def% set that is also equal to 158% (if u make sure that u have little to no substats boosting the HP as well to make it so there is less variables it can help as well). That's the only way I can think of doing it, that way it's fair and equal and it still showcases characters like Noelle and xinyan

@@esqpur it shouldn't be an issue since this comparison is based off each character's kit/scaling. If you were bothered by variance you should've used a flower and feather without a hp% substat since it not a perfect roll. A perfect control would be only be main stat with no additional HP or DEF stats, since I think DEF also affects incoming damage which in return determines the amount of damage a shield can soak. Then another video like this would be something of the absolute minimum a shield can soak regardless of character and build path if a person was to just choose artifacts that only increase main stat.
