ESR meter kit build

With the mod for extra protection using 2 1N5404 diodes inverse parallel, different manufacturers have different forward voltages, will this affect the accuracy of the readings?

I don't know about this mod. I would need to measure the output ac voltage to see if it is below 0.5v or 0.3v ac. I wouldn't do this because it is so low. Arguably a higher voltage limit might be useful e.g. 3 series diodes in LLel with 3 series ie. 1.5v each way. I find it easier to just ensure the cap is fully discharged before use. This isn't something I've given any thought to.

The esr meter should be ok for measuring caps down to about 20nf. 1uf should be around .16 ohm at 100kHz. The meter is 99 ohms full scale. I have the same esr meter as you and I just checked it with a 0.1uf (100nf) cap and it measured 18 ohms. Good quality electros usually show much better (lower) than the values on that little chart on the front of the meter. You can also use it to measure the internal resistance of batteries.

I bought the EVB version from portugal. It was way cheaper and ready build!

Kit AU$105, 53EU= AU$89 probably gone up in 2024, so postage is possibly more than the EVB costs. Yes, EVB is 86EU to oz, that's AU$149, much higher than the kit price. I'm sure the EVB is a good piece of gear. The Altronics shop is only 4km from me so no delivery cost. Plus it's great to assemble! 😀
