Previously a capacitor popped and leaked due to cheap capacitors. It is not an issue how they popped and swelled and had their ESR increase. Just that they have a 105 C. temperature on them and maybe a 5000 expected life. A ESR meter tests under AC current instead of DC for their impedence. My electronics book does not have ESR and needs an addendum. Previously I could not recall from memory any ESR term.

I just received my MESR-100. My unit "tested" two obviously bad "in circuit" electrolytics as having a low ESR. I removed each cap and tested them again and the MESR-100 indicated that each cap had a high ESR. Unless I'm missing something, the MESR-100 is of little use in testing in circuit capacitors.
@toltec13 Жыл бұрын
There will always be 2 readings: in circuit & out of circuit reading. The chart attached to the meter refers to in circuit reading. Now, if you google ESR Chart you will see other charts with a specific uf & voltage that are higher in value than the one chart attach to the meter. That refers to out of circuit reading electrolytic capacitor.

Just received mine today. Arrived quickly but a little scratched up. I believe it might have been used or returned for refund. It wouldn't zero at first, and noticed when I flexed the case, the readings changed. I unscrewed the case, put it back together, and now it seems to work fine. I recommend buying a better one if you can afford it. Otherwise, I tested a bunch of old caps, and I'm pretty satisfied. Haven't done extensive testing with it yet. But overall a good deal, if you are on a tight budget like me.

Friends, this fault occurs when measuring a capacitor without having downloaded it before, inside it has a protection diode D1, short and give this message, replace it and fix the tester, read the user manual
@freemaninprogress16597 жыл бұрын
So you didn't discharge the capacitor you were testing and blew a diode in the tester? Only expensive professional level testers have adequate protection - multi-meters included - e.g. use multi-meter on wrong range and test volts = destroyed meter unless you paid a lot of money for it

if you test a good 25vcap it says it says good cap with lo esr and if it was not in range it says good if c is less than xxuf,then you would refer to a table to cross check it the same goes for other voltages if it is a good cap,50v say,it will display good if c lower than xuf if the cap is the same uf or lower there is a good chance its good if the uf is higher than displayed it is bad it is always a good practice to cross check and if in doubt test a known good cap of the same voltage and uf

Dear Sir , I have already bought this unit You are indicating. Is it possible to lenghten the probes' wires, so as to " work" with increase ease of posture ? I have tried , but tester measurements are not perceived in the right way :Please: my I ask You what to do , in order to maybe ? change the resistance value of the cable iself? I.e. change some inner part of the tester ? Best Regards
@ciprianwinerElectronicManiac9 жыл бұрын
georgiowee Hi. You need to use silicon cable which has a super low internal resistance and you can lenghten it to your heart's content. Then, get yourself a pair of crocodile clips and a pair of banana jacks. Solder the wires and away you go. That's how I always make my own test cable that I can rely on. Also, these ESR meters are very forgiving on what cable you use as long as their internal resistance doesn't vary when you move them. Hope this helps. Cheers :)

How would I measure a 1000uf 6.3v capacitor with this meter in circuit, if the meter only ranges from 10v to 250v on the chart?
@TsunamiUndine4 жыл бұрын
as you can see on the chart on the 1000uf row the resistance decreases when the volt is higher so even if you dont have that exact value on the chart you know it should be a little higher than 0.12, let's say 0.2 it will be a good guessing, so if it give you a 0.5 or more, that capacitor is bad as hell

What if you want to measure a capacitor that falls outside the given ESR table? For example, I have a 400volt 80 Farad capacitor in circuit. How would I test that one to make sure it is good using the MESR-100? Or, can it be done at all using this meter?

It is good for basic repair; however, because this is an 100 kHz meter. That does not replace the expensive LCR. If you were serious work with a lot of SMD/Through hole or 1 pF to 1000 uF, I would get better LCR meter from Keysight with 100 Hz to 100kHz and guard banana probe which is 400 dollar.

could SOME ONE PLEASE tell me what are the values we are looking for using this exact meter. Because I tested like 1000 Capacitors with it, and honestly different brands like samsung read different from rubicons or blu or green ones. I mean like 1. up or down? NOW what if you have a small capacitor 470uf 16volts BUT then YOU also have THE SAME SIZED 470uf Capacitor 35Volts. Going by their chart on the Unit, I would have to throw away 95% of my capacitors. Which i think is as little hard to believe since if i measure the UF, well a 1000uf if its exactly 1000 I save it, if its off by 6% I throw it away. So if One meter is telling the UF is correct, why does this Yellow thing tell me its crap, its all crap according to this meter. And why does it say, good if 470 uf, on 1000uf capacitors? AND YES its Zerod I even took off the leads and use the pin connector. Can someone please let me know how to use this. Mine came with 1 page of china shapes, that i just cant seem to translate into words. The characters look to similar to me + add font and forget it. So of anyone can answer why they all read different, if the same value & Size but diff Co. Or if Diff Size Same UF Same Co. I owned it for months but i find no viable pieces of information from this POS-100 so does anyone know what you look for when doing a test with this?

I measured several good caps and then made up a chart and attached it to the backside of my meter so I know what to expect when testing them.
@PeterKiryluk9 жыл бұрын
Hey do you mind sending me that list? For this meter, the problem for me, (i could not do that) Because I use parts i pull off other Tvs and stuff, so i measure the UF and i only use the ones who are within 10%. I dont have new capacitors and especially because there is like 100 different values. Then each cap is different in size, like 470 can be a tiny 25V or it could be a huge 25V. Back when RCA was a company who invented the TV, they made the sizes the size because they wanted it to work for ever, what i see today in stuff is retarded. Manufactures are not only hanging the board sideways on a HDTV but they still put the caps in sideways too, so the electrolytic fluid pools on one side, snd they use undersized capacitors, like the tiny 470 Uf 35V that are like a half a inch are garbage, all of them. So if you could send me your list (because i never have new capacitors) so i dont even know what it was made to be from the start. Like a Rubicon which is 1000uf most always read 1100UF (from the newest 2013 TV sets, and yet other makes like KMZ make their caps to be 1005 like exact. Then when i get large 150Uf 400V caps, they always read 138uf (most) once in a wile ill find one that is 145uf. Anyway my Email si PeteKiryluk@gmail.com if you could send me a copy just so i can get a hangle on what it should be i would really appreciate it.

a little forewarning to anyone interested in buying this meter: as I just discovered the hard way, this device has no input protection whatsoever, what that means is the slightest charge left in a capacitor will fry it, there's no excuse for that, that's terrible design, and good luck getting a refund or exchange from your seller passed the 45 days paypal protection, mine turned a deaf ear to my requests, I'm going to buy something more reliable

You just glibly glossed over all capacitors except electrolytic. Does this only work for electrolytic caps ?
