Right Now is the second single from the much anticipated collaborative album Resonance by lyricist Essa and producer Pitch 92. The pair demonstrated mastery of their respective crafts, with the sharp wordplay and pounding beats of previous single HeavyweightS, (which features an all-star cast including Klashnekoff, Kyza Doc Brown, Tony D and more). Now, they display their level of musical chemistry, and introduce the deeper side of the album.
Essa describes us as complex beings. Even in mundane moments, we simultaneously experience multiple feelings. They are rooted in our genetic and environmental heritage. They are coloured by the consequences of past choices, and by our hopes and fears for the future. Yet all we have is the present moment.
“Wrapped up in yesterday, missed the presence of gifts. The past is lost, the future’s grey. So the question to ask is - what can I do today (right now)?”
Pitch 92’s peerless production provides the perfect platform for these stream-of-consciousness reflections. Warm bass and soulful chords flow over crunchy drums, with touches of additional orchestration by Colin “C-Swing” Emmanuel and Viva Cee. The sound evokes the legendary MC/producer pairings that inspired them - Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Guru & Premier, Questlove & Black Thought, Common & Dilla.
