I agree with Eddie. When both my parents died. They both were cremated. We had a memorial service with a rented casket , no cemetery, no limos, no police escorts. (The police escort was $500 alone).Both of their urns/ashes are in my living room!. Simple as that!

This is so ironic talking about funerals, I just lost my sis on 6/27/24😞 and we are having her funeral this Wednesday, we just celebrated her birthday on 6/14/24, just made 37, sooo beautiful, and she knew it🤣😔, but she was unhealthy and was trying so hard to work on herself, at 37 she had sleep apnea and had just got her bipap machine 3 weeks prior, she fell asleep on her sofa from a nap and woke up gasping for air, grabbed the wall and her chest and then fell over with her 17 year old daughter witnessing 😢, sorry for rant cousins, still processing, black women, Let’s Take Care Ourselves✊🏾, cousin Rodney, I needed that laugh❤️

Funerals are for the living. And it does help with giving closure. Having experienced two great losses back to back has brought me a different perspective. I was not able to attend one of the services and it was devastating. For the other I was able to honor the individual's wishes and throw a party that we called a memorial service. It was wonderful and, although you are right, you still continue to grieve it gave me solace to be there amongst other people that loved that person and share good memories. It helped me. I dont think the family should spend a bunch of money, but I do think its important to give them other options than a traditional service to honor their loved one. Maybe a picnic, or a party where they share stories, fancy dinner, or a nice trip in honor of the person, or a ceremony where you light paper lanterns, etc... it doesnt always have to be a traditional service. It is also a compromise allowing the individual to be memorialized and honored in keeping with their style and allows the loved ones to take part in the ritual part of the grieving process.

Some people… Especially black women spend their ENTIRE lives caring for and compromising for the sake of others. I was speaking in general, and not specifically on black woman. I would agree with you that black women sacrifice and labor for others too much, but I would hope that one's death would not be the first time a black woman starts practicing autonomy. I would pray that the black women start living for themselves while they are still above ground. It may be me and my own sensitivity on this topic (loss is still fresh for me). Like I wrote, I am coming off of two significant losses and have gained a new perspective on this issue. My intention was not to invalidate anyone's choices, I believe wholeheartedly that the choice, whatever it is should be honored. I wanted to offer a different perspective and alternatives.
