It never was a negative message, it was JUST a message.

It's negative because it talks about the downside of chasing popularity.

@@seeleunit2000 No, it doesn't say that people shouldn't have to be judged their look. It tells the negative side of caring for one's look. It says nothing about what should be done.

Not enough people point out Jodi could have totally narc'd on Daria and Jane, they all but admitted they were going to destroy their work, but she just turned and walked away. Was a small moment to show Jodi stood behind her morals.

Well it was noted that Jodi does see through the facade of Lawndale. Plus there is respect between Daria and Jodi and Jane so, she wasn't going to snitch.

What really irritates me about the change to Darias poem, is that the contest was about what the Teens see, not what the faculty wants them to see. By changing it to be less obtuse, they went against the very nature of what the contest was about.

Exactly. The point is that the school didn't want honesty, they wanted something that would make the school look good. You ever noticed that whenever you point out some hypocrisies in a system those that run it get defensive ? This would be an example.

Mr O'Neil likes to think he's compassionate...in reality he has all the compassion of a Walmart check out clerk 5 minutes away from the end of their shift....on black Friday...in short he's trying to get into heaven on a technicality...

@@xxlCortez Oh, she did care. Care much enough that it would not be considered "proper" to show negative message and I would be received negatively which will negatively impact the donations made for school so she was quite determined to show a message that would be the most optimal to gain as much money it could. The message that would be shown to parents like Brittany's, Jodie's (possibly), Kevin's, Sandy's, maybe even other's like Stacy's or Tiffany's and other popular childrens and what's most important (for Ms Li), wealthy parents. And THAT couldn't stand. Mr. O'Neil cared only about the message to be positive, it could just as well be about eating brussel sprouts or just being beautiful, while Ms Li cared about the reception of the message. Negative messages tend to have worse reception, if it were otherwise she would insist to keep it.

This is my issue with Daria. Anything whether negative or positive she has to see it as negative. He didn't even perverted it and it wasn't useless dribble either. Idk wtf she's talking about. It's like that time her parents were not only hearing her out but agreeing with her during a conversation and it disgusted her. That's why Daria is ironically my least favorite character. Jane Lane I feel follows Darias lead to often because on her own she seems to have a more positive and unique outlook on life as opposed to Daria. But it is what it is.

Daria is clearly unhappy with herself, it's the only explanation with her perception of the world. I understand feeling out of place with the average person being less intelligent, but instead of being open to friendship of other smart people like Jodi, she's drawn to other isolationists like Jane.

Eee.. Did you watched entire episode? The message of the picture was, that many popular kids like entire Fashion Club, Brittany and Kevin and some others care about their looks and popularity so they are able to harm themselves by for the example Daria and Jane made by starving themselves. I recall similar themes were already present in plastic surgery episode and the story of the fashion club about the rattling bones girl that took revenge on the rest of popular kids when she became unpopular because she starved herself to be "perfect". The show kind of preceeds what is known now about anorexia and how harmful standards there were back then. Remember it was 90-ties. They both, BOTH Daria AND Jane agreed with the message that superficiality and pursuit for popularity and "beauty" make often young impressionable (mostly) girls to starve themselves just to be in "right size". Mr O'Neil DEFINITEVELY corrupted the message by implying that the girl is starved "in right size" and TRULY happy, when she WASN'T really. The message is negative, so are Daria and Jane. What did teachers expect? Positivity out of these two? Do you even know them? Daria is just rebelling teen so every time parents agree with her it feels for her that she loses her sense of identity. It's no wonder it's disturbes her or how you unelegantly said "disgusts" her. When you are rebelling agains the system, and suprisingly system agrees with you, you get suspisious, paranoic even: "Is the system trying to get to me?", "Is this a trick?", "Do the system trying to convert me through nice words?" or the worst "Do *I* starting thinking just LIKE the system?", this disturbes, and it's normal. It all depends what standards you hold for the world. I think you are simply trying to convince yourself that your bias towards Daria is justified so you try to confirm it here by misunderstanding it or by consciously misrepresenting what was shown in the video. I see many people not liking Daria (the character) because she obscures things that they feel uncomfortable with in themselves, they see themsleves in her or quite the opposite. Some others see in her this edgy feminist icon which is also incorrect, but that's why they like her however nonetheless. I think also many people glamourize Jane as "not so negative one", "the normal, but quirky friend of a freak", but Jane sometimes is even more cynical and negative. It depends on the moment. But the thing is, she is also very negative, just in comparison with Daria which seems to be constantly without emotions she seems very expressive, but that ONLY because of the comparison between these two. Compare Jane and Jodie, Brittany, Quinn, Stacy or even Andrea and all of them seem to be more positive, maybe except of Andrea, but there's a reason for that. And as for Daria, she seem SO MUCH negative because she, ironically, has very high standards towards the world. She never want to admit that, because it would mean that she actually CARES about it and that would be the soft side she wishes never was exposed. Helen as much as she pretends to be oblivious to her (out of love to her she allows her to raise her on her own, only sometimes pushing her out of comfort zone just to work on her just so she could grow to be ACTUALLY true to her values or abandon them if they start to bother her (which secretly Helen wishes)) she is completely councious of Daria defiance and tricks her just like in the episode "Write where it hurts" so she would write NOT how things are (how Daria sees the world is) but how she wishes world was (how things should be accoring to her worldview) and she did and the story was not only positive but it also was kind of sweet. Helen was touched by the fact that in this story Daria admitted that she loves her family, even Quinn. The fact it Helen and Daria are very similar as a characters. Helen lost hope for the world to improve and as she grew up she stopped waiting and start a family and work. Daria is however still a teenager who still believes that it can be improved, but as incredibly sarcastic charcter she twist this hope into cynisim saying instead "World have a chance to improve" to "World only goes worse" meaning actually the former, wishing for it, asking for it, praying for it. It is hard to have "hope" when there is so much disappointments everywhere so it's easier to tell yourself "No, if I won't believe it, I won't get disappointed". She's being subversive, if I study hard and want an A, but tell myself that even if I studied I won't score higher than C, getting B will be positive disappointmend, a surprise that *wink, wink* "no one expected".
