Great video. It would be nice if you had some accompanying x-ray’s so that the different stages can be seen.

Well...it can be hyperactive or hypoactive, meaning higher or lower "gurgly" sounds.

My son was born at 32 weeks and got antibiotics from a uterus infection I pump and I pray for no NEC
@thenicudoc2 жыл бұрын
I pray your son stays safe also. The lower the gestational age, the higher the risk, so 32 weeks is lower risk than 23 weeks but can still happen. I hope all stays well. 🙏

Thank you. My NICU nurse said at 2 weeks NEC goes down are you finding this true or no?

My newborn premature (35 weeks pregnancy weeks) niece (was born healthy 2,2kg, no breathing problem) but suddenly just died because of NEC, just 4 days life. she started to have breathing problem at night of 2nd day.. then 3rd day, her stomach got really big and bluish.. then 4rth day she is gone.. her doctor gave her blood tranfussion and antibiotics.. I don't know if those treatment was right or not.. because my sister and her baby are living in small city in Asia and hospital is not so good for premature baby and also because corona pandemic, it's not easy to find better hospital.. The problem is I didn't know the blood tranfusion can make NEC more worse.. how come? and how to avoid NEC and to do the treatment? it was very quick happening to my niece.. in just 4 days.. very quick and doctors there don't know what to do.. unfortunately.

I am truly sorry to hear of your famlily's loss. NEC can be one of the scariest diseasea and babies can really get very sick very quickly. There is some association with blood transfusion, but there are many babies that get NEC that do not have a transfusion prior. You are right that the pandemic has made things much more complicated. Sometimes you do all the right things and premature babies can still get NEC and get sick or die. I can't speak to individual cases of NEC on social media, but I am sad to hear of your little sweet angel dying. I pray your family is able to heal in a most difficult moment

@@thenicudoc Thank you doctor for your information is very informative. My niece was not in blood transfusion when she was born, as she was born healthy and no need breathing support.. but in 2nd day, she was suddenly drop and very quick (we didn't expect this to happen), but it was too late to find out this NEC, then she got blood transfusion and antibiotics. is it possible the NEC bacteries on baby got from their mother during pregnancy? if their mothers had streptococcus group B (untreated) during pregnancy time? I think it's very interesting research in medical world.

I've been trying to understand what the difference between medical NEC and surgical NEC. I was 27 weeks and have CP I wasn't able to suck so I had to be bottle fed one I was stayed in the hospital for almost two months. I'm 27 now and I may have symptoms of this my mom had sent me a link about this

Kelvianna.... you are an amazing and strong survivor or NEC. 🥰. Thanks for your question. Medical NEC, also known as Stage I or II NEC, is when necrotizing enterocolitis has all the inflammation, gut problems, and even severe illness BUT no intestinal tearing. I.e...there is no free air noted on Xrays. So we treat it "medically" with antibiotics. When there is a tear in the intestines...we call this know Surgical NEC or Stage III. Now, only surgery can "cure" these babies. It can be really scary because 1 out of 2 babies can die with surgical NEC if not treated promptly....therefore...it is one of the NICUs emergencies and one of the scariest diseases we deal with. Therefore... you are an amazing survivor!

Crhon’s. Can be related to this. ????
@thenicudoc2 жыл бұрын
This is a GREAT question because both Crohn's disease (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) and NEC are inflammatory diseases and so there are ongoing studies to determine whether they could be related. No conclusions yet. Very smart question! 👌

Good morning doctor thank you for your video it’s very enlightening. My son was diagnosed with nec 3 days after birth. He is on antibiotics and there’s a tube to extract dirt from his stomach. The first 3 days the extraction sac was dirty but it’s becoming clear. Does it mean the treatment is improving ??? I’m confused and devastated seeing my child surfer 😢 The doctor stopped food already and has placed him central catetar to feed him with protein to maintain his weight

I was also born at 27 weeks I have cerebral palsy. My mom sent me a link about this because I couldn't be breastfed. I had learned that there are longterm symptoms after surgery but there isn't enough resources or research for adults and it's the same with CP

I wish I new this 10 years ago when no one knew why one of my preemie twins was so sick. Is NEC a new thing or has it been around since 2012? If a child had NEC and it was not diagnosed would a microscope going into the intestines show scar tissue that can verify NEC as an infant?
