In this video, our focus is on applying concepts we have covered in previous sessions to Jazz Standards. The chord progression I have chosen for this lesson is one of the most popular progressions in the jazz repertoire. I hope you enjoy the video and find it informative. Have fun practicing! Mike

I am very happy with this video. This brings together everything that I have been working on for a year. I have now collected everything about Barry Harris, including The B.H Harmonic Method for Guitar. (by Alan Kingstone). And all your 75 videos have been written out because reading English is better for me than spoken. Thanks for all this. My enthusiasm keeps me going at 90 years old.

@@MikeHayesGuitar Could you make a video like this using Barry's approach to a blues, and perhaps a minor blues? I would appreciate it. Cheers!

Hi Mike, thank you for this lesson and the application of the maj-6-idea which sounds very convincing! What is the rule for exchanging the A6 with the Eb6 in bar 4. Is there a hint in your other lessons? Thank you

Hello. Thank you for this lesson. May I ask if there is a lesson on how to arrive at the substituted chord? ie, the behind the seen thought process? Thank you. wrtoomes
@MikeHayesGuitar11 ай бұрын
Hello and thank you for your question. essentially the thinking process behind this chord substitution is a collection (or summary) of ideas presented in the Jazz Guitar Chord Melody series. Jazz Guitar Chord Melody Playlist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5mrY5eBa7amrKs Here's a quick overview of where we are at in the series so far. All my examples are in C. I'll list the resultant chord first and the overlay chord second. C Major = C6 (Major 6th on the Root), C Maj9 = G6 ( Major 6th on the 5th of C), Cm6 = Cm6 (minor 6th on the Root), Cm7 = Eb6 (relative Major 6th), Cm7b5 = Ebm6 (relative minor 6th), C9 = Gm6 ( minor 6th on the 5th of C). I hope this helps. Warm regards, Mike

I agree this exercise is an excellent test of whether you can find your way through the changes of a song rather than the earlier stage where it's necessary to learn each inversion of an individual chord. I found it a nice finger/mind twister to go through the whole 8 bar phrase of ATTYA. I like your classic jazz tone on the GB10. Strings, flats? gauges? Pick sounds like a fairly heavy one? Will you spill the beans? I also play a GB10 with the Rich Severson suggested hybrid D'Addario Chromes 10-48 set but with a 13 and 15 on the top two. For picks I default to a red Jazz111 or a Fender 351 medium. I agree with you however that you have the idealized tone in your head and the hands seek to achieve it. Thanks for your jazz material. You make sense!

Thanks for your question. Yes, I find the Ibanez GB-10 a beautiful instrument that produces a sound that is very close to what I'm hearing in my mind. Regarding strings I use D'Addario Chromes - set number ECG26 (13-56) and the picks I use are D'Addario 1.09mm. I hope this helps and I wish you continued success on your musical journey. Mike
