I'm a guy, never really understood knots in boy scouts. I just wanted to say that this helped me sort out a cross on some leather cord. (I replayed the square knot part until I managed to get it right.) Good video.

OMG, one of the first knots I learned how to tie when I was a Boy Scout, was the Square Knot (also called a Reef Knot). The knot you are tying in the video is NOT a Square Knot, but a Granny Knot, which is very unsafe to use in an emergency because when you pull on the ends, it comes apart very easily. When a Square Knot is tied correctly, the knot actually looks like a square, with the ends on both sides either under or over the loop, thereby making the knot appearing symmetrical. Knowing how to tie a Square Knot correctly (right end over left, then left end over right) is very useful and makes for a strong knot!

Thanks, Liz, we keep working on our recording techniques to improve things for you. We aren't recording in a studio, just a tiny rectangle on a table at the back of our warehouse, with two cameras blocking our view, so it's definitely challenging! But considering how many videos we upload and the fact that they're all free, we're doing a pretty good job! 😃

Good video on knot tying-thanks for showing the slider knot for use instead of a clasp-and, Allie, all I kept thinking about during this video was how many knots are tied accidently by the thread itself while I'm trying to bead a project. lol
@Potomacbeadco5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sue, yes it's a common problem, but if you let the needle dangle, it will spin until it comes to rest, then it's safe to continue beading. We don't realise it, but as we pass the needle through so many beads, we are also rotating the needle in our fingers and each turn of the needle is twisting the thread little by little. Allowing it to dangle and unwind, relaxes the thread. If you're not using a thermally bonded braid like Wildfire or Fireline, you may find that running your thread through thread conditioner or beeswax, can help reduce the effects of twisting. It's a good beading practice to keep an eye on your thread as you pull, as soon as any loops start forming, detangle them before continuing to pull. Happy beading!

This is a wonderful video. I do have a question for you: I have been making rosaries using fishing line and am usually finishing with a square knot plus one more "tie your shoe knot" for good measure. The knots are more visible than I would like them to be yet still seem to be threatening to come apart too easily. Which knot do you think would be most helpful to me?
@Potomacbeadco4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosemarie, you could consider burning the fishing line together or using a beading cable like .024 beadalon wildfire.

I always look forward to your videos. They're very helpful. However, I don't believe your square knot is square. Both ends in one hand should either be above or below the loop and vice versa for the other hand. Just Google "square knot". All the pictures and tutorials show what I'm trying to say.
@Potomacbeadco5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps there are other ways of doing it, but this square knot is effective just the same. 😃
@dianewhiting50975 жыл бұрын
@@Potomacbeadco I believe what you made is referred to as a "Granny Knot" I agree with the previous comment that the square knot has two intertwined loops and both ends should parallel each other. Per Wikipedia: "The granny knot is a binding knot, used to secure a rope or line around an object. It is considered inferior to te reef knot (square knot), which it superficially resembles. "

Yes, and square knot comes undone. Should do an extra turn and make it a surgeon's knot for real holding power.

Your explanation of how to tie a square knot is correct, but the way you tie it creates a granny knot. Different knots for different applications.
