Essential Natural Law: What is Natural Law?

Natural Law is a philosophical and scholarly tradition that traces its roots back thousands of years. At its core, natural law posits that all humans possess reason, and as such, all people, whatever their ethnicity, culture, or religion, have the ability to know the difference between good and evil, right and wrong. But people must also be free to choose to do good instead of evil, and so natural law scholars over the centuries have influenced the creation of the institutions of modern western democracies that we enjoy today, including individual rights, justice, private property, rule of law, constitutionalism, and limited government. Few ideas have been as influential in the development of moral, political, legal, and economic thought in the broad Western tradition as the idea of natural law.
