Water should always flow in from the bottom of the cooler (the end closest to the flask) and flow out from the top of the condenser. Doing it this way always guarantees that your condenser will be filled with cooling water. If you set it the other way around, and if for some reason the speed of the water flow into the condenser decreases and becomes slower than the speed of the water leaving the condenser, the condenser will not remain filled with water. If the reaction were unattended, this could cause problems.

@Ravindu Perera So? Just because something works, doesn't mean it can't be better. His condenser is maybe 30% as efficient as it could be. Not only does his setup result in lower parts of the column being hotter (ie. less effective), but the column is only half filled with coolant. Do things properly, especially when the fix is as simple as hooking two tubes the other way around...

You've connected the water pump in a wrong way. Cold water should rise frome the bottom of the condenser, fill the condenser and get out on top of it. Otherwise, even if there are a few bubbles left, the apparatus might break because the temperature difference is too big. I'm not sure if it can do so in this specific case, but setting cold water at the bottom is traditionally correct and more efficient.

I have researched info on how to distill to get essential oils. What I don't understand though, is why can't you just put the plant material in the boiling water? I figured it would do the same thing. I know the videos I have seen of making essential oil from resins are done that way. The apothecary either smashes the resin to powder or they put the resin pieces in whole and just allow it to boil together. I guess I just want to know if there is any different thing you do with the resin distillation as compared to plant.

The separator piece with the blue valve at the end is always open on one side which releases excess solvent (water) and pressure. More expensive distillation kits like rotary evaporators regulate pressure or control it with valves for more refined extraction like fractional distillation for example.

@gardenlessonsatstrawberyba883
@gardenlessonsatstrawberyba883 3 жыл бұрын
The connection on the bottom of the condenser is usually the input valve for cold water to enter while the water flow can exit out the top of the condenser. Yes a small pump comes separately usually. You can use a sink attachment as well, running water from a faucet into the condenser the same way. Careful with water pressure and flow rate. The faucet setup uses a lot of water without recirculation so keep that in mind. I like to use a bucket with ice water with a small pump so I can recirculate through the condenser in a loop.

It’s advantageous to fraction off different layers of the distillate effectively with a cold trap/condenser. Excess Temperature can be a factor in the degradation of the essential oils if not regulated during distillation. In addition, when less stable fractions are in the distillate solution with oils and not removed, a rancid odor associated with the oxidation of less desirable fractions occur.

@gardenlessonsatstrawberyba883
@gardenlessonsatstrawberyba883 3 жыл бұрын
A glass cold trap or dry ice condenser can be used to substitute the basic condenser seen in video that uses ice water circulation. Not technically ice, but frozen CO2 (dry ice) can improve the efficiency of the extraction process.
@douglascarlson321
@douglascarlson321 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! Ice made from H2O exists at any temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (at atmospheric pressure). So, it just depends on how cold your deep freeze can get! However, once your ice is added to the bucket, the H2O flowing through the condenser is basically constantly at a temperature of about 32 degrees Fahrenheit --- much colder than his room temperature water that he is using initially in the video. So, the really cold ice just basically keeps the condenser water temperature close to 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Different herbs will yield different amounts of oils due to the variation of naturally occurring oils within their tissues. Steam distillation with some herbs requires an increased volume of plant material in order to yield more oil. Hydrosols can be produced otherwise but they will certainly have more distilled water in them than oil.

Steam distillation requires temperatures around the boiling point of water. 212 Fahrenheit You want it to be on a slow simmer rather than full boil. Keep in mind, volume ratio of plant material to oil differs depending on what type of plant you’re trying to extract from. Some extractions require high volume of plant or flower to produce an ample amount of full spectrum oil.

Lots of models online with an Essential oil steam distillation kit search. 500-1000 ML should do the trick. Yes but Rose oil is very difficult with steam distillation since it requires a lot of flower volume up front to extract a good amount of oil. Extracted Hydrosols and Tictures that can be reduced to a refined oil is often easier.

Hi. Can I use alcohol to extract CBD oil?

CBD is a fractional extraction. A basic tincture will often have more of a full spectrum of different layers that can be separated into different fractions. Professional products require extra steps in the extraction process for refining. Look up Column Chromatography for one version of this method. You can use simple tinctures but keep in mind that it will not be purely CBD without extra steps.

water goes in reverse than the steam goes. Also this type of condenser (liebig) isnt the best choice for this.

@@aaliyahsmith7534 I would try with friedrich condenser.. It gonna bring better efficiency... Its a little more expensive though. Mostly ppl use allihn condenser for oils.
