The Essential phone is one of the most exciting developments in smartphones for 2017 / 2018. Essential is a new brand in the Android space but it's headed by individuals very familiar with Android. In fact without Essential's founder Andy Rubin, Android might not even exist. The Essential phone packs a clean "stock" type of Android interface similar to the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL. The Essential Phone also includes a unique, modular accessory capability. Through a magnetic point on the back of the phone one is able to clip accessories including the new 360 camera for Essential phone. The Essential Phone is the first I've ever handled that's made of titanium and ceramic. Essential claims that the titanium structure makes the Essential Phone more durable if you're to drop it. I won't be doing a drop test on my channel (I like the Essential phone too much) but according to Essential's website, when compared to other leading devices (made mostly of aluminum) the Essential fared better when dropped on concrete. The front of the Essential Phone is covered in Gorilla Glass 5, it's got dual 13 megapixel cameras on the back and an 8 megapixel camera on the front (capable of 4K video recording). It's also packing the Snapdragon 835 and 128GB of storage standard. The dual lens system on the Essential phone is different than the system on the iPhone 7 Plus. Rather than going for an extra zoom lens Essential decided to use the dual camera system to enable better low light photos / video and high contrast monochrome photos as well. The Essential phone is also one of the highest screen-to-body ratio devices I've ever looked at (if not the highest) it's got a 5.7 inch QHD display at 2560 x 1312. The battery is 3040mAh battery and supports quick charge via the 27 watt power brick that ships with the phone. Essential claims quick charge potential of up to 5 hours battery life in just 5 minutes of charging. There is currently a pre-order option to order the Essential Phone along with the 360 camera attachment as a kit. The Essential phone is available in four different color combinations including Black Moon (featured here), and Pure White. Stellar Grey and Ocean Depths color combos will be available soon. Another key feature of the Essential Phone is the fact that it includes no branding at all. In fact the device has no visible text on the body... Anywhere! It's actually kind of shocking at first glance as one is conditioned to expect some level of branding. Not so with the Essential Phone, minimalists rejoice!

This phone is massively underrated. I've always gone for established companies with leading technology like Samsung when it comes to smartphones. I currently own a Galaxy S8+ and its great, I have few complaints about it, when I saw the Essential phone for the first time I was intrigued, but not sold. I followed along with everyone else thinking that this would just be another android phone for a medium to high price scale with many flagship features missing, there were software issues and people didn't like the price etc, reviews weren't always flattering. Once I realised the phone had dropped drastically in price I decided to have a look at one, and from the moment I opened the box I was greeted by this beautifully presented phone and very classy high end accessories. It was a similar if not a more enjoyable experience than when I first unboxed the iPhone 4. It truly is a masterpiece in design, the cold hard ceramic back, titanium frame and elegant shape make it feel twice it's actual value, then you turn it on and you're greeted by this gorgeous razor sharp edge to edge display. The operating system is flawless and impeccably smooth, it's considerably smoother than my S8 and a hundred times less fiddly. Everything works on the first touch and it's truly enjoyable to use, the battery is also hilariously good, after a 9 hour day at work I'm coming home with around 70-80% battery, my S8 being closer to 50%. I really hope this company succeeds, they have a much more intelligent business model in terms of not copying everyone else and ramming it with features and bloatware that most of us don't really use everyday. I'm totally sold on this product, even though I still have the Galaxy (for now) this phone has firmly taken it's place. If you have never seen or tried one you should definitely check it out. @@dexterfromlabs still unbelievably good. The battery on mine degraded to about 2,200 mahs, but it still has about 5 hours of constant media. The camera is still very good with Gcam. The processor can still run PUBG mobile at HDR and ultra fps without any frame drops. Updates are gone now but considering this phone went through 3 major platform updates, Im ok with that.

Tested it out at the store the other day, with the updated camera software, and it worked like a charm. Auto-focus was quick, no lag or wait time. At $460 CAD, and the 360 camera only $50, this phone is getting harder and harder to ignore. And now that the only retailer in Canada having it on end-of-life status, I'm seriously considering picking one up before they're all gone, despite my Galaxy S7 still working fine. But with no confirmed date for 8.0 (nevermind 8.1) on the S7, I don't know how much longer I want to wait.

Alex D that inconvenience is a huge turn off in this case. Every single night I use my headphones while my phone charges. Even if the adapter had a charge port, it would awkwardly weigh it down. The true future for removing the headphone jack would be having 2 or more usb c jacks, but we still have no useful reason for removing headphones.

For the demo of finger-print unlock, I think it would be best to place a small mirror under the phone and your finger . So you basically can see your finger (through mirror), and the phone's front view at the same time. Useful!

A year later, used the phone for 6 months. Loved it. Only thing I couldnt continue to use it for was screen size. Reluctantly, went back to Samsung Note 8, and now Note 9. I miss the Essential. If they could make a larger screen unit, I would switch to it, mainly for the stock Android experience. Got lots of feedback from people, all positive. Come on Essential, larger screen!

It's a great phone even in 2019, especially after all the updates and android 10. Yes 10, i've had 3 android 10 updates already. Essential camera is better than google apk now. What do you prioritize design or smooth software experience and camera. If you like or don't care about smartphone aesthetics definitely go with the pixel.If you like aesthetics and mediocre software experience go with the essential. My opinion on the Essential Phone is that it is a decent phone for the price of $700. It is a phone that feels like a clean Android phone like the Pixel or any other Google phone. Also, the camera is decent enough for most people even if it's not fully like an iPhone or Samsung camera quality. I don't like on how there is no headphone jack and water resistance on the Essential Phone. I don't mind too much if there is no expandable storage although it would be interesting to have. Overall, the Essential Phone is not perfect nor amazing, but it does have it's charms that a new Android user might look for.

Essential phone may be as ok as you say, but speaking from experience, if you have any issues with their software, Essential says it is the fault of the network for not "keeping up". POS phone made by a POS company.

WTF- What's This Friday you can add "stupid design choice" by making an edgeless screen and the put the navigational buttons ON SCREEN and not on the lower bezel who sits there empty and unused.

That's actually a hardware limitation - since it's LCD, the screen requires backlighting and the display drivers take up bezel space. Also, there are very few flagships recently shipping that don't use on-screen buttons. Stock Android has contextual navigational buttons (e.g. a small button to change keyboards if the keyboard is open) so I think manufacturers try to stay away from them at this point. You'd be sacrificing some functionality and contradicting the bezel-less philosophy craze.

M&J teamZ Jonas I had the Samsung note 4 and after a year of using it shut off and wouldn’t turn back on. It was in perfect condition no cracks and I had a really good case on it. I went to get it fixed and they said the battery was dead so we bought a new one and it still didn’t work...

No this is a "premium" phone from a specification perspective. The problem they experienced was probably financial, and made worse by Samsung and Sharp. 18 months ago when they designed the phone they couldn't get Samsung or Sharp to build OLED screens with their cyclops cutout. Only a couple of vendors have the expertise and machinery required to make OLED screens at scale. Apple and Samsung (who both builds and uses the OLED for. their own products) are probably consuming 80% of the world's OLED screen capacity at this point

I just bought an Essential PH-1 (hasn't arrived yet) to replace my BLU Vivo Air. I just left another long-winded comment on your video for the Air LTE. I love the BLU Vivo Air. I don't want to replace it. But I really have to, I've been considering a replacement for about 6 months now. It's taken me forever to decide what I want to buy because nobody (including BLU) really makes a phone like the Air anymore, at least not in similar dimensions with similar weight, and according to my research the Air is still the thinnest phone ever made. Pretty crazy that nobody has matched it in 2017. Anyway, it's interesting to watch this video after having decided to buy it. It's not my ideal phone (thicker and heavier than I'd like, among other things), but it's got so many attributes to it that attract me: -vanilla Android (no bloatware is a big one in my opinion) -guaranteed updates for 2 years (also Essential seems to be pushing updates out faster than most manufacturers) -insane build quality, the titanium body really interests me as I never use cases and I do sometimes drop my phone -good hardware specs -no logo, this one is weird but I really love how clean the phone looks -the design in general, it just looks freaking great -length and width similar to my Air, doesn't have the weird 18:9 aspect ratio -that screen, for whatever reason, it keeps catching my eye despite the camera cutout, which doesn't seem to bother me at all the more I see it. I don't know, for some reason that screen looks great in videos (despite the fact that it's not AMOLED). I don't get the tall, weird aspect ratio that smartphone manufacturers are starting to use. I can see some advantage to using it on a truly bezel-less phone, but I don't want a physically taller phone because I keep my phone in my pocket, and my phone is already tall enough. So I like the size and shape of the PH-1. It's got some drawbacks to it, compared to my Air, but there's so many strong positives for me that it drove me to buy one. I compared it against several more expensive flagship phones and none of them had enough positive trade-offs to convince me over the Essential. I can see why it may not be for everyone, but it's nearly perfect for me, and I can't wait to start using it.

After less than a week of using it, I fucking love this phone. Oh my gosh. It feels amazing. Just holding it in my hands, it feels so solid. It's a lot heavier than most phones I've had, which I thought I'd hate, but it just makes it feel so quality, and I'll never forget that it's in my pocket (or in other words, if I forget to grab it it I'm going to realize right away). It's also not nearly as thin as the BLU Vivo Air, but again, it feels like a flagship, like the thickness is an attribute of its quality. And it's really not even that thick, I was just spoiled by the Air. (And unlike the BLU, it's not going to bend from me sitting down while it's in my pants pocket.) So if I lay the Air down on top of this phone, it's only slightly taller and a little more wider, and yet the screen is MASSIVELY larger. The screen is a HUGE upgrade and I love it. I don't mind the notch at all, because it is in the notification bar, so it doesn't actually intrude at all (and it helps that it's not a large notch like the iPhone X). The fingerprint reader is fast as hell, the hardware is zippy on vanilla Android, I can't find a single thing to complain about this phone. Yeah, it doesn't have wireless charging, but it charges ridiculously fast with the supplied USB-C charger, and the screen isn't OLED but it still looks great. Battery life seems outstanding so far, I thought the Air was good but this looks like it's far better based off my tinkering so far. It also gets less warm than the Air while being stressed, which is saying a lot (the Air won me over in part because it didn't get really hot the way the Galaxy S6 did in my pocket). I really like the rectangular shape, not too curved, and on top of that the flat back of the phone, it's sublime. The haptic feedback is, as you said, great as well. All in all, I would characterize this phone as "sublime," I pick it up just to try to play with it because I like how it feels in my hands and how it reacts, this is the best phone I've bought probably ever. And I only paid $400 for it. That's a steal. I'm surprised this isn't more popular. Also, I've already gotten 2 updates in the week I've been using it, so the support is excellent, far better than most phones. I will be buying Essential again the next time I buy a new phone. The stock Android experience is awesome. I will admit that, while I'm not a camera guy, I don't care for the stock camera app for what I've tried, but it's all been low-light stuff and I haven't really tested it out properly. But the camera is pretty low on my priority list. I rarely take photos.

Unkanian Why don't you use a Tempered glass screen protector? I had my lg stylo 2 for 8 months I always used a tempered glass screen protector and case the phone is still in mint condition now I have the lg stylo 3 plus with a tempered glass screen protector (BTW none of my Glass screen protectors ever have bubbles you have to know how to apply them right and don't buy the cheap ones get the 2 pack for 8-$10 dollars) and case get A TEMPERED GLASS SCREEN PROTECTOR!

I have had it for 2 weeks. Got the 360 camera with it and it is a blast to use, especially when mounted on my motorcycle on some twisty mountain roads. No grips so far. Pictures and video are good quality. believe it was a great deal at Best Buy for 450.

The Essential Phone's notch is smaller, and they make sure it doesn't cut into images, whereas the iPhone X will actively try to make the whole screen be taken up, including cutting into the image with the notch. As for pillarboxing/letterboxing, I have a Galaxy S8 and I don't really care about it. I'd rather have the full image than the full screen.

I actually just got this phone yesterday... I have some likes and dislikes as expected. Here are a few: The sound is awesome, really cool ringtone/notification sounds, the look is beautiful, it's clean, crisp, finger print is on point and the 1st thing I did notice was that there was no logo on the phone. Camera needs more features, it can come off as a little plain, can't delete just a specific call, the phone is very heavy, you can't really do much to customize the phone to your liking, It seems that I'm unable to add extra windows to the home screen.. . There are a lot of things that I miss already coming from a Galaxy and an LG BRAND.. . I DON'T THINK THIS PHONE DOES ENOUGH OR HAS ENOUGH FOR ME TO KEEP. I will give it a couple of more days before I make a decision.
