Arent we supposed to be very cautious ventilating? I know it helps removing heat and smoke but it adds oxygen to the fire

Yes but technically if you have the fire directed through a single point it can calm things in other areas and it can relieve some of the smoke in a structure. Kind of like a pump, the hot air flows out while the cool/fresh air gets entrained in.
