Hey there! In this video, I talk through some awesome upgrades for the First Gen Tundra from the years 2000-2006. I consider most of these to be upgrades to what came from the factory, rather than modifications that we are adding from the aftermarket. With that said, there is a lot of aftermarket support for these trucks as well, and you can quickly find yourself in the modification rabbit hole for off-road goodies. Hope you find the video helpful, and thanks for watching! - Sal

Man reach out to Josh at First Gen Offroad for any suspension parts , He's figured out a economy front end lift and shock setup to make them ride better than spacer lifts or 5100's on the top notch. You have your truck looking good!

Wow that's cool, the first gen will definitely feel more bare bones than the F-150 but its simplicity is pretty cool and almost nostalgic at this point with modern cars having screens on screens. Thanks for watching, and best of luck with finding a clean 1st gen!

Great batch of updates n upgrades!! Thanks for the tip on the ws sprayers...I've tried 2 different sets and they're still junk... I built my own exhaust...got rid of the extremely restrictive wye pipe resonator setup...it may seem silly, but I used a hockey net tube frame for the bends, two tractor mufflers from Princess Auto (our version of Harbour Freight) and a buddies car lift... I may have to post a walk through on my 03' Tundra Limited...you got me thinking buddy... cheers from BC Canada

Sal, Thank you for your detailed ideas / upgrades for 1st Gen Tundra's. I recently followed your advice & upgraded to the pricey FJ Cruiser windshield sprayer nozzles. WHAT a Difference!! I'll be following your other upgrades as I need. I'd found a 2002 Tundra Access cab w/ 84K miles (about 2 yrs. ago). Drove 2+ hrs. from Dallas to Austin to nab this cherry. Was a TEXAS company truck & garaged for N# of years. I'm working my way thru Trans. filter, Dif., Ball Joints, etc checks that this will be my LAST truck. Thank you for your detailed analysis of these 1st Gen Toyota Tundra's !!!!!

Love the Video Sal, you inspired me to work on my 01 Limited Tundra. Keep them videos coming! One thing I did to myns is a 1 and a half inch wheel spacer. It gives the tundra a more aggressive stance and matches it to the fender flares. Want to know your opinion on wheel spacers

I got the little aluminum linkages for the rear windows too. If you carefully bend the steel arm the linkages attach to you can fine tune the fit when the window is closed. When they are fully latched you want the gasket to be firmly compressed so there's no sound or water leaking in.
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 4 ай бұрын
Huh I never thought about trying that, that's a good tip! Thanks for watching
@benjaminhamilton2338
@benjaminhamilton2338 4 ай бұрын
@@JDMDriveway Hey, thanks for the video, lot of good ideas. I can't claim to have invented the concept of bending that linkage arm, it was recommended on one of the first Gen Tundra forums or facebook groups, I forget which cause it was years ago. Just take it slow and think about where your tool will go if it slips, it'd be easy to smash the window if you tried to just hulk out on that bar without thinking it through. I don't remember it taking much force at all.

I have the OEM back window arms on my 2002. They do that same thing where it pushes out when you close the lever all the way. If I remember correctly, you have to tighten a screw at precisely the right pivot point to get it to not rock back. And, if you don’t tighten it, it will slip.

If you haven't replaced them yet I highly recommend replacing out the screw mounts for the cowl. Mine were leaking into the cab badly. A cheap replacement with OEM parts to stop a very serious and annoying leak! Had to do it on mine and it hasn't leaked since! Good video and some of these upgrades mentioned here I did on my truck and it's made it so much nicer like the LED's and rear windows.

I have adjustable billstein shocks on my 1st gen, they are currently lowered on the front to give it that rake look (which I don’t like but was how the truck was when I bought it), but I plan to lift it on the front to equal it out. Another thing I learned later that makes the truck look higher is to remove that step plate on the side which I literally have never used. Great video man, definitely going to be buying that bed bushing.

fyi i put in led lights about a year ago on the difference of electricity in the odometer made the whole dang thing go bad. needless to say make sure you’re careful with putting in the leds. they might look great (because they do) but might cause the odometer to short out and cause more headaches in hindsight. (i now have to subtract 140,000 miles from the odometer everytime i need to see how many miles i have 😐)

I think that you could also freshen up the matte black plastic on your bumpers and on your fender flares. I have heard of two options: Either a matte black spray paint, or a using a heat gun to freshen up the plastic. Proceed carefully with a little testing first, I don't want to be responsible for messing up your truck.

I still have my 2000 TRD 4x4 with less than a 100K. Highly Recommended but Expensive Interior Upgrade-> *Toyota Tundra TRD 2002 SEMA Show Leather Package,* Toyota offered it as part of the Ivan Stewart SE trim package in 2002 and maybe 2003. It adds significant bolstering to the front seat bottoms and backs along with two-tone perforated leather, front and back seats. Toyota stopped offering it through the dealer but I was able to order it from the Company that supplied it to Toyota. 1200$ for the package including installation. It is better quality and cheaper than the 'regular factory leather' that was 2000$ as an option when new. It has been in the truck 16 years and still looks great, my truck came with the cloth interior.

I personally tried to 2 inch lift kit (one inch spacer) and was not satisfied. The upper ball joint will hit the spring of the shock due to the suspension being forced to go lower than it does from the factory. If you get larger upper control arms this will be fixed, but put it on stock suspension and you will ruin your ball joints as well as your shocks! It makes a very load clunk when you go on a speed bump as well.
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 10 ай бұрын
Yeah I've been super conflicted on what to do for my suspension. My shock bushings are completely gone and while I want to do a full upgrade with 5100s and upgraded springs, I really don't do any off-roading to justify the price. A simple 4600 replacement with the same spacers sounds pretty enticing for less than $400 all in. Maybe I'd regret it, but I'm really leaning that way for now

I bought a two pack of marine grade outlets, one power outlet, and one usb on Amazon. Now I can charge my phone without adapter/inverter, the sockets are more secure in the plastic dash, and the std outlet is not so tight. $12 upgrade and only required a little low speed dremmeling of the dash to fit the new parts.

I’ve heard of nightmare scenarios, trying to compress the springs in order to get the spacers to fit. Did you not encounter any of that? Thank you.
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway 9 ай бұрын
Funny you should ask that, I have a video going up tomorrow of me installing Bilstein 4600 shocks with these same spacers on top. To answer your question though, I haven't run into that issue. These spacers just sit on top of your shocks so you don't need to compress your springs any more than you would stock. Re-installing them on the truck is a bit tougher because you're adding a lift, but if you disconnect your LBJ it frees up a lot of play and you can mount them no problem. Definitely check out the video going up tomorrow to see what I'm talking about though. Thanks for watching!

@FreedomLovinLady
@FreedomLovinLady Жыл бұрын
I got that code a couple of years back on my 2003 Tundra, it's an O2 sensor. I recommend getting a new one from Toyota, the aftermarket ones tend to fail. As I recall it's bank #2 (passenger side so not the side with cylinder #1 on the engine) and sensor #1 (so in front of the catalytic converter rather than behind it which is sensor #2). Replacing the sensor fixes it 9 out of 10 times, assuming you don't have an attached wiring problem. It might be something you can replace yourself, though it can give you some trouble getting the original out. I get my Toyota original equipment parts online at Lagrange Toyota parts. They are several states away from where I live, but they average 10 to 20% less than the local dealers in my area and have free shipping for most orders over $75. They have two websites, one actually runs a little cheaper than the other, no idea why. If you call them they'll tell you about both sites too and which one is cheaper 😂. God's speed on fixing your Tundra 😊💖🙋‍♀️

I have the K&N cold air intake on my 2003 Limited V8 4x4 Tundra. I put it in when it was 2 months old back in late 2003 after I bought the truck new from the Toyota dealer I worked for while I was in school. I have the original filter and box it like new condition stored away as a back up, just in case. The K&N system does change the air quality and freedom of flow in the engine and gives it a slight almost turbo like whistle when you push the truck a bit. I felt it helped with the 6,500 lb horse trailer I towed at the time and also gives a bit of power gain during regular driving, and harder accerations. It only helps the gas mileage if you keep the filter clean, every 25-30k (more often if you offroad a lot) like clockwork, though these days they actually say longer between cleaning and re-oiling (I stick with 30k max). Also don't put on the oil too heavy, or you restrict the air flow. The computer may take a few days to fully adjust to give you max performance on this upgrade. My first filter and cold intake system lasted until last year when I noticed the "million mile filter" was getting worn patches. Since I only have 150k on the truck I called K&N and they sent me a replacement. I got a really helpful person on the phone and she sent me nearly the whole system when I told her the sensor holder on the top intake feeding into the throttle body was coming loose. The only original peice now is the heat shield which only has a tiny bit of rust, so I'll repaint it this year. I also needed a new heat shield gasket, but the second person I talked to there wasn't as helpful, so I had to buy that part, but to have a whole new system, it was worth the $12. I cleaned my throttle body and the entire engine while I was in there and it looks great 🤩, reminds me of when we were both shiny and new in this world just barely getting started on life's adventure. Since we are still both running strong, many adventures on and off road to look forward to 😊💖🙋‍♀️ God bless.

I mean its hard to say, mostly depending on where you live. Up north the 4wd trucks will probably hold their value more, but down south a 2wd truck has less components that could break or need service (front diff and axles), so that might be more desirable. I think people get caught up on "4wd or bust" (at least I did), but in reality I don't do any offroading and 2wd would be plenty fine for my use case. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
