I build screen rooms here in Fl. My supplier hired a young man that came out of prison. This hard working young man has been constantly asking me questions about the trade. I was reluctant at first, but I soon figured out his ambitions to be his best self. Now, he’s married and has a baby girl on the way. However, I just found out he’s leaving and has a new job as an Apprentice Pipe fitter. How Awesome is that?! I’m sure he will have a wonderful career and a great foundation of knowledge to back himself up. I was that young man once upon a time. 38 years as a Machinist/Toolmaker/Fabricator and Millwright and Floor sweeper. Never be afraid to learn is what my mentor Taught me. When we were kids the farmer down the street had a sawmill. We'd ride our bicycles there we had a lunch our mother packed and watch that mill run for couple of hours. Thanks for that video. :-)

I consider myself blessed to have grown up with the people I did, I do dirt work and land clearing for a living and everything I know was taught to me by a close family friend of ours. he's been doing it since he was 6 years old and now at age 70 he told me he didn't want all his work and know how to go in the ground with him some day. So if anyone has made it this far in to this comment trust me, there is no limit to what knowledge and wisdom will bring you in life and if anyone is giving it away, take as much as you can.

Amen to hanging out and paying attention to the old guys. I'm an old guy myself now and I spent my life working with wood, either building houses or doing custom millwork, cabinets and trim. Much of what I know came from the wisdom of my Uncle who was born in 1905. He wasn't quite old enough to be in the First World War but he remembers the hard times that came along with it and the Spanish Flu and then the great depression. At first he began woodworking for a small company in Nebraska. He built many of the specialized machines needed for their specialized work and eventually they employed over 500 people there. During the Second World War that company switched to war production, making Glider parts from Straight Grained Spruce. Eventually he went out on his own to build custom cabinets and he also built quite a few houses. Helping him and learning from him was what gave me my love for woodworking and eventually I too was self employed in the business. Over the years I built several homes for myself. I have many fond memories of my uncle and we were best friends as well as coworkers. As young people we don't know yet what course we will follow in life. But listen to your elders because they can impart knowledge to you that just can't be learned from any books. I always enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.

I love working with AS White Oak. Years ago I made a tack box out of it for my daughter so she could take it to 4-H horse shows,,complete with dovetailed corners. Heavy as heck, but she's still using it now in her 30's

Just this morning I ran into my favorite local sawmiler. He was gassing up his dirtbike for some time in the woods with friends. I promised to visit him soon, as I am in need of some more rough sawn cedar for a few projects at home. Nothing like buying real boards, from a local guy, with local logs, cut by local loggers. Fun to watch it happen, too.

Enjoyed seeing this Woodmizer in action. When I began to seriously consider a bandsaw mill to use on the place, the Woodmizer was the first bandsaw mill I watched a fellow operate for most of a Saturday morning. That was all it took. Decided to go with a Cooks sawmill because they're made in state and only a short drive to go pick up from where I live. As soon as it gets a bit cooler this fall, I've got a stack of logs to go to work on. How true those words of wisdom at the end.

I can't tell you how much I enjoy your content. I am turning 50 in 3 weeks and I miss my father. He was an old school carpenter, then he opened his own cabinet shop 30 years ago. He is gone now and much of his wisdom is gone. Seeing and hearing you talk is like having a conversation with my father. Used an old David White level when I went in business it had a very long scope on it and was extremely accurate, but had to let it retire when the scope picture started falling off. I will never forget all the concrete I formed with that thing.

Having a mill is much cheaper In my eyes since a 2x4x8 is $8 , 4x4x8 posts are $17, sanded 3/4 ply is $95, and if a tree is in the way you get so much raw material

@@michaellynn9763, yes, it’s that expensive. We’re all hoping it comes back down to what it was before COVID, but first we need to have the borders open back up and for people to get back to work. And we’re also in a housing shortage so that’s not helping either. I’m hoping that we’re back to whatever normal is in a year from now.

I not only learnt loads about building, but also many life lessons and lessons on how to grow from a boy into a man. Scott, I so desperately wish that my sons could hear your message, but they're teenagers and can't seem to hear anything from an older person. I never quite had self-discipline at the level that I needed, but I do have a good work ethic, as does my wife. It is SO very hard to convey self-discipline to my sons when my health issues make it so very hard to lead by example. I appreciate nearly every video that you and Nate put out. My father used to say you can't put a old head on young shoulders and I have come to realize this in my twilight years. Every day is a good day and the simple things in life are free.
