Before the big box stores forced the local hardware store into retirement, I would go with my grandfather and sit around the coffee pot with the other gentlemen of infinite wisdom, and learn things that don't get printed in books. Thank you for rekindling a very nice memory. Like Grandpa said, "You will learn more with your mouth closed, than you will while you're talking." For the price of,"throw a log in the woodstove kid" I got to listen and learn the things that seperated the men that really know things from the men that THINK they know things.

You could probably help Cy weld a hex shaft to the boat winch that a battery powered 1/2" drill/ driver hooks to and turns that for him. You could also make a detachable handle for the hex shaft that he can use if he happens to not have a battery charged for his drill and the power is out. Or maybe he's just content with how it is! That's fine too lol. If it ain't broke don't fix it right? Might save his shoulder though. That's a lot of cranking.

I think a gear reduction would be the way to go. Seems easy enough to turn now that you could increase (decrease?) the gear ratio so it would take less cranks at the expense of being a bit hard to crank.

I mean he made the awesome dumb waiter back in the day to save the labor of hiking the wood up the stairs so Im guessing, especially at their age, that Cy and Maxine wouldn't mind the convenience of a cordless drill operated dumb waiter. Especially if the modification was like you said easy and optional.

I stumbled on essential craftmen’s videos years ago in my mid 20’s. I’m from Flint Michigan, and good men are far in few when I was growing up. One person that’s always been consistent throughout my life, that I actually had to live with during high school Years was my grandpa. He retired from GM at 50 and everybody always came to him to weld stuff and fix things, he had a small woodworking station in his garage. Unfortunately, the way I grew up I always looked down on trade work and thought these type of things were just the old way to do things. In my mid twenties, I got my first framing job and have been watching these videos ever since. I gained such respect for trades men, and how wickedly smart and honorable some of these men are. Sometimes it gets a bad wrap cause of the drinking of low level carpenters and laborers and that’s fair but I can’t tell you how much this content has been so transformative and impactful for me. & every video, of both these men just rings nostalgia for the best man I’ve ever know, my grandpa. & I’m so thankful for you guys!

This reminds me of the wonderful years my family and I spent in NW Montana. Cut and burned10 to 12 cords of firewood a year and believe me that will keep you fit and healthy. We looked for tamarack (larch) and Douglas fir which are preferable to any of the other species in that area. Gotta admire Cy for his get up&go at his age. Im 72 now and it would be a real chore for me to work that hard today.

I used to sell firewood and haul it into the area where I sold it, I would stack it in by pickup cross the bed up to the height of the bed, and I would put 80 pieces in each row and 3 rolls would make what is called in our part of Tennessee a rick of would, 4'x8' which is 1/3 of a cord so when you mentioned 80 pieces I knew she and I had something in common, got to pass the time of stacking thinking about something. Nice work. I am 78 and still cut wood and heat our home by burning about 3 cords of wood every year in the basement and comes up the stairs and heats the whole house. For me, nothing beat the heat coming from a well dried piece of wood and it works for us and feels better than electric heat, but our central heat is rarely used, I guess that is why our central air and heat unit have both lasted 25 years a piece.

I love the dumbwaiter for the firewood. I think the thing that puts people off to heating with wood is hauling it in the house everyday, along with the mess. I built a wood box in the corner of my living room with a door through the wall at the bottom sill. the door is chest height when standing outside and the box holds almost a week's worth of wood for me. The woodshed is 5 paces away so I have to fill the box once a week on Saturdays and it eliminates the mess of dragging it all the way through the house. Wood heat is one of the cheapest most pleasant and environmentally friendly ways to heat a home.
