Things I've learned over the years in rc flight... 1. That tree is closer than you think. 2. Low inverted fly bys sometimes become lower inverted landings. 3. Always take one more flight before leaving but never take your LAST flight. 4. Never put anything up in the air you are not prepared to take home in a garbage bag. 5. Working late at night on planes often leads to useless upgrades (see garbage bag note). 6. Your enjoyment of flying often last longer than your fuel in the tank. 7. The rudder is not just for ground control. 8. The cg in the manual should be scrutinized. 9. When a screw falls out of the carb and lets air pour in you get the most thrilling 10 minute flight. 10. If you have automatic seatbelts (it used to be a thing) don't put your quarter scale wing in the front seat.

Beautiful models, awesome flight characteristics!! Easy to see why builders of these planes risk the "odd mishap" upon landing! "No Guts, No Glory" must be the watch word for the RC flyer of these big bucks models!! Loved the bombing run, would have liked to see that in person; and the poor "toasted" models, caught by the flames, was sweet!!

Something oddly humorous about watching a group unload 10k worth of RC flight gear just to lift off and nose dive it into the ground, then pack it all back up and drive off. All inside of 20 mins. lol Pro tip: Bouncing planes off the deck is a sure fire way to remove your landing gear thus essentially screwing yourself. Gliding in under minimal power with the nose slightly up and putting her gently on the deck results in another flight later that day. Just in case as apparently 90% of the ppl in these videos look like they are landing bricks instead of planes.

I had a thought that might be useful to someone. The tail draggers in particular easily end up on their noses when landing. An elastic powered device in the fuselage that would propel a trim weight into the rear at the touch of a button would get the tail down where it's wanted at the crucial moment. It would need to be easily resettable of course. TBP..
@rcbinchicken5 жыл бұрын
And hard to accidentally set off in flight... :P that would look hilarious. And expensive! But it's an interesting idea. Glider pilots have done interesting stuff like having their battery on a little tray that moves back and forth on a worm screw, as I gather gliders often need to shift their CG for optimal performance in different stages of flight. So that idea could probably be refined further.
@Chooie65 жыл бұрын
Changing the center of gravity rearward like you suggest would make the mains bounce more easily. When landing tail draggers putting them gently on the main wheels while holding a slight nose up angle of attack works the best. Basically there's a sweet spot in the decent rate and ground speed that needs practice to achieve consistently.
@Chooie65 жыл бұрын
@@rcbinchicken the reason gliders do that is to penetrate the wind better or be more floaty. in the case of an rc glider you would get better help in landing to have spoilers and flaps to slow down and kill your lift while holding your nose level.
@HO-bndk5 жыл бұрын
@@Chooie6 Yes, the shifting weight won;t work (or it'd be used in real a/c already) tail goes down > AoA abruptly increases > more lift produced > mains bounce

One would think when your flying a Big bird like the English Jet bomber and you get a flame out you would set her down in such a way you end up either real close to your emergency equipment or at least not at the opposite end of the field ..this way any fire still burning can be addressed speedily ...
@roadsweeper15 жыл бұрын
Not really. He put it down asap, while still heading into the wind. You want to get it down on the ground fast, regardless of where it is, rather than having to do a half loop in the air just to come to a stop closer to yourself on the ground, which could result in whatever fire there is, taking out the rest of your engines or your flight controls and you lose the entire aircraft.

I'm looking to get into RC (yikes). Three things I am seeing in all these crash videos... 1. A lot of situations could be less tragic if they shut off power rather than trying to hopelessly recover (often at high/max throttle). Does the operator normally have a kill switch for these planes? Adding power to a crashing vehicle is usually not a good idea. Cut the power man. 2. If a takeoff/landing is going wrong, the operator should abort and try again later. Seems like they double-down on takeoffs/landings that are clearly going bad, rather than pulling out or taking a second pass. If something is going wrong, stop and don't keep going. 3. What is up with landing gear that is too weak or doesn't work? I'm a pre-newbie, but it seems that 90% of these crashes fall under one of these three categories.
