How far out in front of the court or how far back behind your head do you toss the ball?

Nice introduction. I have a topspin serve but didn't know how different a kick serve can be. The sound can instantly tell you the difference as well as a kick serve is a swishing sound rather than a hitting sound.

good tip. my coach had me serve from behind the fence around the court to get the vertical motion going.

Ok ian you play lefty right ? You've been watching nadal play for years and you know how he destroys one handed backhand players who are right handed its such a predicable tactic from mr nadal not a great deal anyone can do , what would be great from you ian and I am sure people on youtube would love to see it you make a video on how to deal with nadals attack to the right single handed backhanded , its such a popular discussion and I would love to see it that would be great

Well, this is the first hint of what to do but I've still got to get the ball to go forward over the net. Can't just let it spin and hover over my head! I need the next helpful point on how to push it forward!!

this is more topspin serve not Kick serve... kick serve has a left to right path .. there are many close up slowmotion videos that demonstrate that fact
@EssentialTennis

Honestly, I'm not sure its physically possible to hit a serve with literally the straight vertical path that these feel drills execute. The toss would have to drop reeaaally low, I don't think I've ever seen it done. The point is to develop a feel for what its like to accelerate more upwards than forwards, which is by far the biggest obstacle average tennis players have in creating any real "kick". I agree, the drills themselves don't actually mirror a real kick serve. I've used them countless times and never, ever seen a player actually exaggerate the motion (do TOO much vertical). It's designed to get them moving in the right direction, not do literally what the drill executes! Does that make sense?

Great drill to start off the muscle memory. Nice slow pace so your brain can register the sensation in your right arm. Forget about hitting it down court for now and focus on generating spin.

I suppose you reserve the rest for the next stage because the kick serve should have a hybrid rotation, somewhere between the top spin and the side spin. Or putting it in other words its a top spin on an axis different from the ball's trajectory
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 10 жыл бұрын
Yup! You're absolutely right, Christophe. This drill is specifically designed to break students out of their "straight", "lateral" swing paths and get them to feel what an upward swing is like. The reality is that on a good kick serve the racquet is traveling up and to the side at about 45 degrees at contact.

Outstanding. I'm sure yer more detailed stuff will point out that the ball is a little to the "left" of yer eyes/head.

Glad you enjoyed it, Kevin! The toss actually doesn't have to be as far to the left as most people think. I'll be going into more detail soon :-)

Hi Ian, I watch and hear your videos very carefully. Now I can hit kick serve though very low percentage. But whenever goes in, it is either Ace, unplayable or I get very weak return. Though I generate lot of top spin but my main problem is, most of the time it is going long. How can I fix this issue? Please share your expertise. Thanks.

Ravi Rawat That means your racquet face is too open (facing upward) at contact!

You don't have to change the mechanics at all really though. Just toss the ball further into the court and jump in to it. Helps with disguise too.

I’m sorry, Ian, I have to call you out on this bullshit. In what world does this help anyone comprehend how to kick the ball? As if the ball rolls that far across the string bed at contact.
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 6 жыл бұрын
In the first 35 seconds I say two times that the point of the drill is to gain a better "FEEL" for what a kick serve motion is like. Nowhere do I say that the ball literally rolls across the racquet face. You're correct, it most definitely does not. -Ian
@Tennis_MenACE
@Tennis_MenACE 6 жыл бұрын
Ok with saying that, to teach the correct swing path, wouldn’t you just show them the correct swing path via demonstration of a shadow swings or something? This rolling of the ball across the string bed is universally taught... everywhere, & I think puts the idea into the players mind that that’s how the ball actually behaves a contact.
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 6 жыл бұрын
Great question, Will. I do both. Which one I choose depends on the student I'm working with and how they learn best. Some players have zero patience for step by step demonstration or explanation, they want to do and feel. Others don't "get" analogies or feel drills at all, they need to know what's REALLY happening and see exactly what path their racquet should take. If you watch our videos of me teaching players you'll see me use both approaches for the kick serve. Here's a video where I talk about the pros and cons of "feel" and "science": kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIS4aqV3rqZnrKc
