Although I wasn't born there (parent from there), Guyana has this place in my heart after my last visit 13 years ago. Memory lane is right. My best ones were when I lived on the Essequibo coast during my childhood with my grandmother, Auntie Ma, Ma, as we called her. Lived in Airy Hall many, many, many moons ago, a small village spanning the way from Supenaam to Charity. Eagerly looked forward to riding the Makouria steamer from Georgetown to Vreed-En-Hoop, the train to Parika and finally the Malali steamer in order to get there. Then a short bus ride. Cars were not plentiful so one used the bus to get around. Of course you had to wait as there was no schedule. Ate the freshest and best of fruits, fish and shrimp from the backdam and river, crab, wild hog, iguana, birds like Chow, Spurwing, etc. Fun times swimming at Thompson waterside and trenches in the backdam. Not forgetting Riverstown creek. Feeling for(catching by hand) fish. Making and setting crab traps for one of the sweetest and hairless crabs called Bundarie. Throwing a cast net or using a hand seine to catch fish just after the rice field was ploughed. Learning to paddle a boat along the Essequibo river and later often used to fish and my longest ride to Hog Island, across from the coast. There was no electricity or pitched road then in the area where I lived. Playing games like school, hop-scotch, catch, hide and seek, etc. on a moonlight night was the norm. Other times, listening to scary Jumbie, Old Higue, and Moon Gazer stories told by the elders at night with the hair raising on your arms, and how frightening it was going home. Learning to ride a bicycle (ladies) for the first time on rocky, uneven, sandy road experiencing frequent, involuntarily stops and the hurt sustained only my (anatomy) jewels can speak to. Climbing a coconut tree by using a rope or one made from a dried branch lying around that was placed on the feet with enough space so it aided in climbing, that was only topped by enjoying a refreshing coconut water soon after. Went bare feet everywhere as was customary. Got chigger on my toes and that was no fun. Often times if you did not remove it quickly and stumped your foot, you saw stars ( ning, ning). At the time, plaster was home made from a bar, wax like substance bought from Olie or Chunno shop. A small piece is put on a piece of cloth and then held against the lamp to soften and spread easily which was then placed on the chigger or on any cut or sore area. The donkey cart rides, also riding my friend's parents sled (dragger) pulled by Bulls that were used to fetch the paddy from the backdam was so much fun. My first and last experience helping my friends at harvesting (cutting rice/paddy) using a grass knife and donning a straw hat from which later there were numerous scratches/itches. Helping with Mashing (paddy separation) where a bull or two were tied together and made to walk around a pole with the cut paddy stalks beneath their feet. Planting rice (seedlings) selecting a stalk from a bunch and inserting down in the mud in an almost equidistant manner and being laughed at when you failed. All in all, very memorable. Couldn't ask for better.

I remember the olden days at school when we had to write compositions of adventures or experiences of some other nature. You reminded me of your experiences. Thank you for sharing. ESSEQUIBO is fantastic, mostly well developed and yes, the largest Rice producing industry in Guyana. Thanks and bless his soul, The early Dutch Settlements in ,1738 greatest guy called LAURENS STORM VAN GRAVESANDE who was the GOVERNOR and who first introduced rice crops in ESSEQUIBO. He researched and shipped rice from China, Ghana, Nigeria and India. Then Made a Hugh BUISNESS of it in Guyana . The Afro Slaves used to work with rice farming but then the slaves rebelled against so their labours were reduced, then came the British Colonisers who banished the Dutch settlers and took over the rice farming, hense,the Indians Indentured slaves were introduced by the British. The saw opportunities for rice farming and sugar plantations and decided to remain ,since then history speaks for itself.

@@awongutume Yes, don't allow the experience of diarrhoea to put you off . Imodium is recognised as one of the best diarrhoea tablets to travel with and tar tablets. Guyana is still one of a great places to retire especially after living abroad for long time. And these days it's worth going back during the winter seasons abroad.

@@shampersaud2763 - won’t the next time! Miss the taste of iguana, wild hog, agouti, wild cow and bundarie crab. Hot and cold lake, Iteribisi at Mainstay. Understand there’s another called Capoey. Want to also do Bartica and visit the new resort built off there too. Managed to do 63 Beach and Corentyne. Splashmin on the highway and Linden. Went to Kaieteur Falls. Was not worth the money to fly. Cold food, no announcements from the guide nor did they fly over the falls which would have been nice. The other smaller falls we visited after had broken, non-working and smelly bathrooms. As a teen I went overland to Kaieteur, now that was amazing and exciting. Unbeatable by far, overnighted at some place along the way. Swam in the cold, dew overcast river, trekked from the bottom to the top right next to the falls. It was scary trying to get to the edge to look down. Had to go on all four. Can’t forget being sunburnt. All in all, that trip very memorable far surpasses flying there.

Bannazz... suh much memories. Sorry to fall into Guyanese slang or twang. I spent so many years surveying in Essequibo. I know all the villages but can't recognise anything. Essequibo really developed for the better. In the early 70's I had a 4 door Vauxhall Viva that was just sprayed over ( Sky Blue ) and we took it down to Lake Capoey. I drove it into the water at the edge of the lake and we sanded it down to a smooth finish. Back then there was no clear coating. Wow.... the amount of girlfriends I had there.... in Anna Regina there was Sunny Lord Hotel and restaurant. I remember many nights there after work throwing back Bonded Reserve... haha. brother I lived with Krishna and Rohan cousin Basdai Beharry ( Kunjebeahhry) from Hampton court she left guyana in 1985 , she follow you as well and said to me this week you know her parents as you born aand raised a few doors down in Hampton!!
