We always decide what our center of interest is when we first see a photograph, it’s always the thing that makes us want to paint the scene or take the photo. But when we start the painting we want to think how to make the focal point stand out so the viewer sees it first.

Really appreciate your channel. Other artists would charge a lot of money for most of the information you give us so generously.

Thanks again for another great tutorial. I found (at 8:40) it particularly helpful to see how you gradually went from light to dark on that hill. I’d have painted it all light, so I’ll pay attention to this idea.

Phil, good points as usual. So many people are out their posting themselves painting on you tube, and it's like they want to put the "whole world" on one little canvas or board. No, there has to be a good reason to choose what you choose in a painting, it is called the focal point, and without that it's just a conglomeration of things, all disconnected from each other, and confusing or difficult to look at. Once you get past trying to put Everything you see into your painting you will improve, and not just a little, but vastly so. Your paintings may still suck, but it won't be because you don't have a focal point!! Then you'll have some other things to work on, like maybe values, color temperature, and drawing!! Check Phil's vids on those aspects of painting. So, good luck everyone, and have Fun! LOL ;D
