I love the " replace the h of the acid with the carbon of the alcohol". Its made it so much easier.. thankyou so much

Your videos are amazing revision, I've watched lots of Esterification videos and read different text books but your visual explanations really helped me! Thank you sooo much, keep on making videos!

At 2:24, isn't the OH taken from the carboxylic acid and the H taken from the alcohol? Or does it not matter where the water has come from?
@Gohanson8887 жыл бұрын
Esters are derivatives of carboxylic acids with general formula: R-CO-X. So, OH is taken from acid molecule, not alcohol! Author should know about it. It was prooved by the experiment, when methanol reacted with benzoic acid and oxygen atom in methanol was labeled by radioizotop O18, and when reaction was stopped, author saw that radioizotope O18 was in ester molecule, not in water...

I don't need to know this until year 13 (in my school) yet I find this very hard to resist learning. There's a playlist with all your videos regarding a levels and they totally help! Who says last minute revision isn't effective (for my mocks)? I appreciate the time and work you put into these videos, thank you !

Hi, when I learnt this in school we formed H2O using the H from alcohol and OH from carboxylic acid. You did it the other way. Which way is the correct method?
@jennamarcus42839 жыл бұрын
really helpful! i like how you pronounce methyl haha. in america say "meth-el" instead of "me-thyile"
@MaChemGuy9 жыл бұрын
***** Some of my students use the American pronunciation, they watch too much Breaking Bad I guess. Glad you like them :)

Is the reaction between carboxylic acids and alcohols to form an Ester not reversible?
@MaChemGuy4 жыл бұрын
Will Barker Technically yes.
@willbarker56064 жыл бұрын
If drew it as a reversible reaction in my exam would that be okay to do so?
@MaChemGuy4 жыл бұрын
Will Barker I teach OCR and they would allow either
@willbarker56064 жыл бұрын
Good thing my exam board is OCR too.

During esterification, -OH group is removed from carboxylic acid and -H from alcohol. The mechanism shown here shows -H leaving from acid.
