Etching a glass mirror with Armour Etch etching cream. I create a custom hummingbird stencil for glass etching using contact paper.

Natasha! This is brilliant and I'm so ready to do an etching myself! Your instructions are so comprehensive, even to the point of neutralizing the waste water afterwards (did you hear my question on that as I was viewing?!?!) And LOL, only you would put roses in your acidic rinse water! And someday when I have my house and make my own etching, I'll tag you and show you how you inspired me! You're a queen! Thank you so much! 🤗 Etching is a lot of fun; you definitely should give it a try when you are able to! The first time I tried it I was so nervous about messing up and the acid and everything, but it's surprisingly easy. And, yes, I just couldn't resist putting the rose petals in the water! 😊 The plastic tub normally lives outside, and it's kind of dirty and ugly. As I was setting up the shot, I was thinking, this doesn't look very pretty...in fact, this is very ugly (lol). How can I make this look a bit...nicer? And then, I thought, rose petals, of course! :)

Thank you! ❤ An interesting thing happened shortly after I published this video. A hummingbird flew right up to the window, and was trying quite frantically (and repeatedly) to get to the wreath hanging inside the window. The wreath has been hanging there for a long time, and I haven't ever seen a hummingbird fly up to it before. The bizarre thing was how hard the hummingbird tried to get to it. It's just a plain green wreath, not flashy at all. I've only seen a hummingbird do that one other time. It was at Grandma Johni's house. She had a beautiful floral arrangement in her kitchen window, and we were all sitting there chatting when a hummingbird flew up to the arrangement in the window. She was so excited :)

Thank you so much, Debora! Once I got over my fear of messing up, I found out that etching is a lot of fun. I've been thinking it might be fun to try this on drinking glasses too. I'm really glad my mom suggested it; it's a great DIY project and not too difficult either. You should definitely give it a try! :)

Yes, that’s correct :) It doesn’t work on pyrex, acrylic, or plastic, so the vinyl should be unaffected.

Is there a way to add color at all?

I’ve never personally tried it. I have seen people apply color after the etching cream is washed off and the piece is dry. You can’t add any pigment to the etching cream itself, but you can color the design in after etching with inks, waxes, or paint. I think the armour etch website has more details and instructions on how to do that. It sounds like a fun idea; I’ll have to try it sometime :)
