Yes it's a very cute moment. In an interview after the wedding, the father of those twin boys (who is a television personality here in Canada, and the son of one of our ex-Prime Ministers) said that the boy's reaction was because he had never heard trumpets before. They surprised him and he was so excited to hear them. You can just see the joy and excitement on his face. Pure gold.

This was written for Queen Anne to celebrate her birthday and her signing a peace treaty with Spain “that brought a lasting peace on earth” as Handle puts it. “Oh Light Divine” is the first peace in the “Ode to the Birthday of Queen Anne” composition.

Nita Frank you’re not tone deaf she was very flat . Just underneath the note throughout. Strange closing of the throat sounds too. She sounds incredibly tense. It’s very high and she was most likely incredibly nervous. This piece is written at a high tessitura. It’s a challenge under the best of circumstances lol.

Anyone who can't appreciate the transcendent majesty of this is, in my humble opinion, of a different species to me! I've listened to both this and the album recording a number of times on decent headphones, and while the live version is slightly less well recorded (understandable given the less controlled setting and a single take) the majesty of this version wins out for me. It's live, it's full of beauty and it's tied to a moment in time rather than existing in the vacuum of a recording. It may not be a faultless rendition, but in the moment, and subsequently, I've found it to be deeply and profoundly moving. Therefore pretty much the highest praise I can give. I'd rather be moved any day of the week than hear technical perfection which leaves me cold.
@AntPDC6 жыл бұрын
+ Tony No one's disputing the utterly sublime music here; rather the performance of it. A bad performance of this is is a big problem because it's a piece of music dear to the hearts of many lovers of Handel. And if one were invited to perform at an event of this stupendous magnitude, you'd bloody well ensure that you make a better fist of it than Ms Thomas did. This is entirely fair criticism - she flunked it royally, and one is sad about it because the transcendence you described was ruined for those of us who hold this piece in the highest esteem. For this Royal Wedding, it should have been flawless.
@toekneeheart6 жыл бұрын
AntPDC You are quite clearly far better versed and familiar (and therefore better placed to judge) than I. I willingly concede my naïveté. However I shall revel in it because, to me, it was beautiful and moving. No matter how plebeian my ear might be, I took something deeply profound from Elin Manahan Thomas’ performance. Clearly there are more controlled versions, but for emotive power, this one wins out in my simple opinion. That is just this commoners opinion. Many years ago I sang with my choir at St George’s chapel and have incredibly fond memories of doing so. I don’t recall quite as many tv crews though...
@AntPDC6 жыл бұрын
+ Tony You make an entirely reasonable (if far too modest) comment Tony. Believe me, I get the force of it too: the occasion was spectacularly moving by any standard, and we all wanted Ms Thomas to shine in this piece - to do it the justice it deserves. At any rate, thank you for sharing your impressions. Best wishes, Ant.

Indeed, it’s a very hard piece to sing . I’ve sung it myself many times and under pressure it’s extremely hard. It sits at a high tessitura throughout with only one slight let up. I can’t imagine the pressure she was under here. She is closing her throat a lot which is causing her to be just under throughout. She will still be one of my favourite sops though. People should go listen to her performing it on other occasions as it’s sublime.

She must have been very very nervous, because normally she sings this (very difficult!) piece in a wonderful way. Listen to the studio version here on youtube, it's just breathtaking. Here she fights permanently with the intonation, there is no line, no phrasing, her voice sounds very sharp and sometimes even strident. Probably the acustic of the church, I don't know.

I’m beginning to wonder if it wasn’t written for a boy soprano. Aksel Rikkven did it with such ease and purity of time.
@xhgeorgeli6 жыл бұрын
The song was originally composed in D major for an alto-range counter-tenor (like Iestyn Davies, as mentioned in many comments above) back in Handel's time, and that was the same version which Aksel actually sang when he was still a boy soprano; however, the version Ms. Thomas has always been singing publicly ever since was actually a modified one in a much higher D♭ major tone, which is a better tone for a soprano (and also for this song, I think). BTW, Aksel's 14 now. His voice started to break as he enters pubity, so he decided to become a young baritone instead. It's a bit sad for us, as we might not hear his angelic boy soprano voice any more, but he's already performed twice as a decent baritone on stage in public. So good luck to him.
