Whenever there is a friend telling me after a breakup that they wished they could forget their ex, I tell them to watch this film. It's so easy to remember the negatives at the end and forget the positives of a relationship.

I think that's the message of the story too. The memory erasure is ultimately just a plot device to be able to convey this very message. Also the types of people we are towards the end of a relationship in many ways is a product of who we are. People who go through multiple marriages never seem to get it. If one relationship fails, it might be your partner, but if you continually fail at relationships, it could be you that's the problem.

This film is one of my favorites and even in reactions to it like yours I will notice tears on my cheeks while viewing and ask myself, "Seriously, you're letting this get to you again?" Yes. I think I will.

This movie hits so hard emotionally. It truly is a modern masterpiece. The writing is great. The acting is great. The visual effects and CGI(minimally used) aren't there for show, like so many movies today. They serve the story in a way that elevates and explains what is happening. The lighting choices are so effective in the memory sequences. It's one of the movies that I find rewatchable. Every re-veiwing I find more clues imbedded that help correlate the timeline and the memory wiping. I defies catigorization. Is it a drama? Romance? Sci-Fi? Surrealist? All of the above? Ugh! So good. 10/10

The important thing is that their second relationship isn't doomed. Maybe they've changed enough (even with their erased memories) that they're now a better fit for each other, or maybe the demise of their first relationship can be traced to a totally random event that won't happen this time, or maybe a totally random event will happen this time that will save their relationship, or maybe this new start is enough to do that -- or, worst case, maybe it'll fall apart all over again, but this time they'll be able to keep the memories of the good times. This movie ends with hope, and hope is beautiful. That's why we cry.

The music makes this movie for me. It has this ability to make you feel so anxious and uncomfortable, but at the same time absolutely pull at your heart, be playful and whimsical. I also don't know if Carrey did some of the art pieces in this movie, but he is a very talented artist. Man, you nailed the meaning of the hair and the whole layout of the movie so fast. bravo

Regarding the audio problems ect. This is only a guess but based on the fact that this video has had some copy right issues Jason has been forced to edit it so it's less likely to receive a copyright strike. So inconsistent audio of the film/reverse shots of the film/ heavily edited was done to avoid this.

This is one of my favorite movies. You may have already realized this, but Clementine didn't change her name; Tangerine was just a nickname Joel gave her and she gave her doll the same name as herself. I'm impressed with how quickly you figured out that the beginning was actually Joel and Clem meeting for the second time; I didn't pick up on that until Joel was describing how they first met to Dr. Mierzwiak. Some people don't get it until the end. I'm not the most optimistic person, but I choose to believe Joel and Clementine made their relationship work the second time around.

Poses the question "is it better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all?" The end scene, when it repeats itself on the beach (in my opinion) is that they're doomed to repeat, but they've accepted that. To them, the answer to the above question, at least now, is "yes" In my Top 5. Glad you enjoyed it.

When I met my now ex we went to see this movie in the theatre - it was one of our first dates. We were like a carbon copy of Joel and Clementine - then around a month after we saw the movie we flew out to NYC and took the LIRR out to Montauk. We were together until 2016; one of the big arguments we had paralleled the one they're having in the movie talking about children - I was working a lot, and he insisted I wouldn't be spending any time with a child if we had one, so, no kids. Then when we split up I was so angry that I told my ex that if this memory erasing procedure existed I would have had him erased. Now years later I realized that I don't want to lose those memories; while we had a few bad times, nearly everything else was positive - and fun.

I had a very emotional reaction to this as well. The filmmakers effectively put us deep in the hearts and minds of the characters. But you predicted pretty much every plot point where I was barely keeping up. I've watched it probably a dozen times before and I'm still noticing things.

I would classify this as a (dark) romantic/dramatic comedy. It’s impossible to put into a single traditional genre. A very unique and entertaining film.

This is BY FAR Jim Carrey's best dramatic performance... And that's INCLUDING Man on the Moon... The absolutely INCREDIBLE documentary about the life of Andy Kaufman!! I just LOVE how the entire theme of this film is "fated love"... That even if you delete your memory of someone, there will still be a piece of you that remembers... Like at the end of the movie... When Joel and Clementine accept each others faults, understand that NOTHING will EVER be PERFECT... But they're willing to try again!! I imagine it doesn't matter how many times they have their memory wiped, THEY'LL ALWAYS END UP TOGETHER!!!

Michel Gondry is by far my favourite music video director in the 90s-2000s (when MTV and music videos were a thing) and he has perfected those dreamy perspective shots using no CGI, only physical props, check videos of Bjork, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk. Amazing and unique, as is this movie. A true artist!

Pretty much a perfect movie. With Coby working out the timeline so early, this became an interesting test of how the movie works if you spot the “twist.” And it does (just like Sixth Sense does). There’s something really profound in this film about the value of relationships that don’t work, and whether patterns in relationships are inevitable or can be re-set. It’s a beautiful film.

This is a great one. Really blew me away when I saw it in the theaters, I think. I love when comedians get to that stage where they want to not be funny and stretch into dramatic roles. Sometimes it doesn't work, but sometimes it can be really great. Jim Carrey had already been on that path, a little bit, but this was a new plateau for him. Prior to this, he did a biopic of Andy Kaufman called "Man On The Moon" which was good, but because it was Andy Kaufman, it wasn't exactly playing it straight. There's even a really good documentary about how method he went to be Andy, and if you don't know Andy, it's kind of debatable which one of the two of them were more out of their minds. You have to see to know what I'm talking about. Another one to check out on a lesser but similar note is Will Ferrell in "Stranger Than Fiction". Which isn't quite on this level, a little more light hearted, and comedic in a really sweet way, but still a really good flick, and Will Ferrell is very good while playing it very straight. There's even a couple moments where the story would've allowed for him to be a little more like you'd normally expect of him, but he doesn't go for it.

I ADORE this film. I saw it in the theater when it first came out and I had no idea what it was about… and was just floored. The director had done some amazing music videos and was so creative. Just amazing performances, direction, effects, story. Since you love this one, here’s some other films are that just as indelible: “PLEASANTVILLE,” (starts out a comedy and turns into something much, much more), “STRANGER THAN FICTION,” (another brilliant film that went totally under the radar. Great cast, story, acting, etc), “AMELIE” (magical French film that is so beautiful and romantic and fun)… If you see any of these films, you will never forget them. LOVED your take on this one, so I’m sure you’ll adore these. Cheers!

One of my favorite movies ever. And great job -- you're the fastest reactor to pick up on the real sequence of events, especially the intro being their recent re-meeting. The sci-fi elements are so beautifully done, and I too think it's amazing that such a wild and unrealistic premise can be shaped into such a believable and realistic depiction of a relationship and hit you in all the feels in the way that this one does. Charlie Kaufman is a bona fide genius. A reviewer once said this is the most realistic depiction of a relationship in film. I must agree. But the footage of them frolicking in the snow at the end plays in a loop three times. What are we too make of that? They can't repeat their original actions, since Mary has destroyed Lacuna. Now you only get one more chance. . . . If one has the guts, I highly recommend Kaufman's other films, especially his magnum opus "Synecdoche New York" (2008). After watching it, one of the New York film critics spent the rest of the night alone in a bar getting drunk. Brilliant work, but strong coffee.

Ooh nice, never seen _anyone_ "get it" that fast, I certainly didn't (saw this in the cinema and you could kinda feel the ripple as the audience hit a critical mass of penny dropping :). Such a wonderful movie. Painful and funny and beautiful. An _actual_ love story. Almost certainly top ten for me (I don't really _have_ "a top ten" but i'm pretty sure this is in it :). And a low-key _amazing_ cast. (when you were talking about the stars I thought "What about the Plough/Big Dipper, doesn't _everyone_ - at least in the Anglosphere - know it ??" then I remembered you're an Aussie and it's a northern constellation. Unlike Orion, depending on the season :)

I see this movie as a puzzle, but all the pieces of the puzzle got dropped on the floor. There is no box to see what the image is supposed to be, so you don't know the final picture until the very end. The image is slowly assembled, out of order chronologically, before your eyes as the enigma is slowly revealed. I've watched a lot of reactors react to this movie, but you certainly picked up on the "beginning is the ending" twist and the Montauk beach connection quickly. Insightful!

I think the part about being drawn to certain people is kind of b.s. If people naturally went for people based on some inherent feeling or vibe then so many different kinds of people would be going out. Relationships are formed based on attractiveness and even more so social value. Like for you, would you date a guy who did a customer service job? Or would that make you question whether to give him a shot? I’m not saying this to be rude, just to point out a sad reality. And if I’m being super honest, I think straight guys don’t care nearly as much what their partner does as other people do. Like, I would date a movie theater usher for all I care if I liked her and found her cute. It’s nice to see two characters who I would categorize as definitely not the most desirable. Makes it feel real.

29:02 - He is fighting the erasure of his own memory because he has changed his mind during the actual procedure. This makes the work of the technicians more difficult. He also seems to be trying to alter his own memories. It is like being in a lucid dream and trying either to alter the events in the dream, or else fighting to wake up out of it. The Elijah Wood character is one slimy worm indeed.

I'm impressed you cracked the timeline mystery so early in the movie. Myself I barely got it at the end. But it's one of my favourite movies. Though in the original script the movie ended with Joel and Clementine entering an infinite loop of breaking up, erasing memories and reuniting. Thankfully they thought better of it. The way it ends now is actually somewhat hopeful. Sure, they lost their memories of their previous life together, but they surely will remember the day they heard each other's tapes. And how in spite of all that they still were so drawn to each other. It strongly hints at love and attraction being about more than concrete memories you can mechanically erase. Which - until we finally understand the human brain fully - is a fascinating idea.

Selective memory erasure isn't actually all that farfetched. It is a technology which scientists are working on now, using certain drugs. But it would not be quite as depicted in the film.

that was wonderful, you picked up a lot of things on the first time. if you really want a kaufman film unchained then hopefully somebody pops in Synecdoche, New York, a movie about mortality. somebody gave him the keys to the car and wow is that movie dense. eternal sunshine is one my favorite films. the poem which is in a throwaway scene is exactly what the movie is about. is it better not to feel pain or to make new memories with both sorrow and joy? great channel, keep on making great content.

32:39 "This would have been an awesome movie to make." Oh no no nooooooo. The behind the scenes of how intense Jim got trying to prepare almost literally broke him. It's gut-wrenching to see some of those clips of him going off the deep end, pouring himself fully into the part. Also, there's a couple of deleted scenes that completely change the context of the Joel character and would have made it a completely different movie. If ever you want to know the power of selective editing a film, watch those deleted scenes.

I wouldn't trust the characters which: Ruffalo, Dunst or Wood play to even execute: a random error, effectively!! They are physical representations of: unreliability and carelessness. 🤬🤬 🤮 I loathe those "people" the MOST (in this!)!

I really can't watch this movie. Ironically, the memory of this reminds me of a deep love I once had. But, looking back. I really want to say, that Charlie Kaufman is an incredible writer. He has shown that in episodes of Black Mirror, and also in "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" too. I do need to see his other movies.

I saw this film in the theater when it came out on a date with a girl I had had a crush on for 6 years. It devastated me. She didn't like it at all. I knew then we were not compatible and my crush faded after that. I bought it as soon as it came out on DVD but have never opened it or watched the film since that night in the theater. I made it through your reaction, though. Thanks. 👍🏻😌
