This is one of my favourite scenes from one of my favourite films. The emotional payoff at the end is made all the more electrifying by Jon Brion's excellent score.
A bit of context/explanation of this scene's ingenuity:
In his opening monologue, Joel admits that he has trouble making eye contact with women. He spends the next 10 minutes of the film struggling to get to know Clementine, but his inhibitions continue to get the better of him. Clementine behaves erratically and appears confused by his body language, but she is persistent and desperate for his attention. After having tried everything she could to get him to respond, she finally shows mercy (or clemency) and lets him leave her house, but brilliantly asks him to call her when he gets home. He does, and without the pressure of her physical presence, opens up, and smiles.
All of this is heartbreakingly poignant in the wider context of the film, which I will not spoil for you here.
I hope I have shown that this is nothing more than a fan video, posted simply for the purpose of others' enjoyment. I ask Focus Features/NBCUniversal not to have this taken down.

Remember this is after the fact he had his mind erased, so there was still something in Joel's heart to not only go inside her house but also call her, maybe this scene is trying to say you can't erase what the heart wants.

@Tunir Biswas I think the confusion is over soundtrack vs. score. The movie has both an amazing soundtrack and score, and the existing songs as well as the original songs by Jon Brion (Phone Call for example, in this scene) are part of the perfect score for this movie.

They have put these old Hindi Bollywood movie songs completely in sync with the scene. 1. When Joel is telling about how his life is not so interesting. The Hindi song in the background, " Mera Mann tera pyasa" which means My mind thirsts for you and that complements the way Joel looks at Clementine. 2. When Clementine holds Joel's hands. The song in the background, " Vaada na tod", which means don't break the promise. The soundtrack of this movie and everything else is so thoughtful.

I think that this scene is supposed to parallel with the “meet me in Montauk” scene, where Joel decides to leave Clem in the house alone and he’s left with the regret of being too scared to stay. In this scene, Joel attempts to leave, but Clem decides to give him her phone number and ask him to call her. So when he gets home and decides to call her, that’s when he decides to stay; and so maybe this time things will go differently.

I couldn't agree with you more about the closing of this scene. Phone Call is my favorite song in this movie because of this scene. It's both humanizing and resonant. And because I've had that experience that Joel has. The calm man who is under-confident of his life suddenly meeting someone he believes could change him, and eager to hear from her again not short after arriving home. It's such a powerful scene. Greatest movie ever.

In the original cut that is now a deleted scene, Joel and Clementine talk on the couch all night in a long drawn out scene until the sun breaks through the curtains and lights up the apartment. Something was always so sweet and touching about that idea. Really showed how much these two ‘strangers’ were really drawn to each other. However, the beautiful music while Joel walks home in the dark, the snow falling lightly, the anticipation in his dimly lit apartment. It does a wonderful job at capturing such a personal and intimate moment.

the phone call part makes me a little sad, because i was involved with a pretty extreme/eccentric guy once, and it was just really, really hard to be around each other, in person. but, on the phone, it was easier. he's not around anymore (he committed suicide), but the static(ky) sound of Kate's voice, and the, "you miss me?" remind me of him

I think comedians do such great work as more serious characters in films because they’re all a bit fucked up and see the world much differently than normal people do. Especially the one’s that do observation comedy. They can really put themselves into a role because they study humans on a daily basis for material. Jim and Robin being incredibly great at switching to a much more serious and emotional side
