There used to be a very large presence of Polish people living in Vilnius, and during the period between world wars, Vilnius was part of Poland. That explains why many graves have Polish names. Furthermore, prior to a century ago, church records were written by the priests, many of whom were Polish, and surnames were often altered. I always look forward to your adventures around Lithuania, and this was another one of your many gems!

I highly recomend visiting the Vilnius TV tower which is 326 meters / 1069 feet tall and has a restaurant at the rop with seats that slowly revolve in a circle around the top of the tower and you can see the whole city from above

@@laura-bronner if you get to Vilnius by bus then it is straight to 2G bus (probably the easiest way) that makes less stops and you will end up right next to the tower only a little walk up the stairs and up the street. Or if you like bike rides you can take a ride to it through Vingis park and then up the hill (which, sadly, will be a bit tricky at some points) and you’ll havens opportunity to take a ride through other park with wooden sculptures from Lithuanian tales called Pasakų parkas (fairy tale park). The Vingis park is beautiful especially in the fall when it will shift from green to all the autumn colors. There are a few cafes to chill or to warm up in later autumn. Another think is the polish/Lithuanian celebration of Night of Holy Spirits as someone already mentioned. That’s the time You can have an actual romantic outing and a tour through Lithuanian cemeteries especially the old ones in Rasos, Antakalnis, though the big ones that are further away but not as old look spectacular in the ocean of cable lights. If you like scenic spots right next to Vingis park there is Žverynas, the former hunting grounds for dukes, that eventually became a place to take a rest from the city rush for wealthy people. It has lots of old wooden houses (villas, summer houses, bigger houses that had rooms for rent). Also there is Belmontas, a former paper mill that now is a huge restaurant, a bike ride away from city center. Actually there are loads of things to see, national gallery of art with a historic exhibition of Lithuanian arts, the Mo and contemporary art center if you do like arts. There are roots to get to know history by talking to sculptures and lots and lots of places to get a nice snack or incredible coffee.

Uzupian here, you missed a great spot near the old cemetery. Theres a little road that leads down by the side of the river down a hill, with a great side view of vilnius as you descend down the modern walkway leading down to a bridge by the river where there is another fun walkway, along the river, this area is now being called paupis, which roughly translated to “just under the river”, (whereas uzupis roughly translates to “behind/beyond the river, or as i like to call it ‘riveryond’ 😁). Wonderful place in vilnius.

Isn't that the place that has lost tons of greenery and now it is just a very narrow pedestrian path left next to extremely boring, large and overcrowded modern architecture district right in UNESCO old town? It no longer even feels like an old town when everything got demolished, even 19th century factory that could have had a cool conversion like one in Tallinn.

and I heard about the River from The Doors omg. Never been to Užupis, thank you for showing me D: About those summer vibes if you're interested. We call it grannnies summer here in Palanga, when it reaches like 22C in autumn. I have to represent my town! Sooo the waves here when it's windy are pretty special I think. Best spot is up to the belly button, you can jump over them, smash into, dive under, and with a good one ride it to the shore. Ofc it can be dangerous, life guards are pretty common and these times they do put up the red flag more(it's more strict). But if you're careful, not going for a swim but a dip, theres a group of careful people next to you(theres always groups even with a red flag) it's fine.
