It’s not about ownership it’s about your partner wanting to go that far of their own free will. As a guy that is one of the biggest heart love crushing feels you can get when your woman wants to take your last name. It’s something that means so much to me. Some guys don’t care and they may have other things that are important to them but we are all different. Marriage is more traditional than practical. In modern days it really doesn’t make much sense. No one respects the vows in a large majority, you let the government into your relationship and ultimately you don’t love your partner more cause of it. So in the case of these two the video is about, if they don’t get married oh well nothing changes. I think it’s fair for him to make sure she knows his needs and that he doesn’t enter into a marriage if he would not be comfortable to do so. What may have been once a woman’s biggest honour (taking her husband’s name) is not anymore for many people since the growth in women’s rights. We are not lesser than any man and so this idea that taking your husband’s last name is the biggest honour is outdated. I wouldn’t say their relationship works as how you describe and it doesn’t really matter if Faith was less well known before dating Ethan. My partner and I have a son the same age as their daughter and we are are a similar age to Ethan and Faith. But although my partner is currently solely making money for our family, we are very much 50/50 in the responsibilities we share and the respect we have for one another. I suppose if family legacy is important to you then you’re outlook makes sense but I think people have woke up and realised there is more to life than legacy and a family name.

I had the same conversation with my fiance about last names. He actually asked me if I wanted his last name or to keep my own. (Of course he wants me to have his name) but we came to the same conclusion as faith is asking for. I'm keeping my name as middle and I'll take his last name. Some of us will have double barrel first names, middle names, etc. and also some of us just memorize like our grandparents last names just for fun or to confuse foreigners. Also I feel like thats just a completely different discussion bc those names are on your birth certificate. Taking your partners surname is changing your name from what’s on your birth certificate which is just dumb.
