Ethan Hawke became my favorite in Great Expectations alongside Chris Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Bancroft, and Robert De Neiro. I’ve rewatched it a gazillion times, and always find something new presented in Alphonso Cuaron’s rendition of Charles Dickens tale. Though his work in Explorers, Tape, Chelsea Walls, Taking Lives, Hamlet, Lord of War, The Hottest State, Gattaca, Boyhood, The Newton Boys, White Fang, Alive, Reality Bites, and Before Sunrise, Sunset, and Midnight were all stupendous in their own right. As an actor, as an author, as a musician, and as a director he is by far the most talented and favorite of actors at present.
