It seems Nightmare has some kind of trauma and is not as evil as we thought he was.Clownpierce probably brought him back thinking he could make Nightmare put all of his anger into fighting techno.But when Nightmare saw to much he started losing it.But this brings up the question.What is clowns story?Also Nightmare seems to be close to clowns power level cause he was able to fight clown and it seemed like he was winning.But he also caught him by surprise so maybe that was it.But what I'm wondering is who was talking at the end? It seems like they were talking to Nightmare, but it could be someone else like one of clownpierces mercenaries. Edit: I have thought about this further and I have realized Clownpierce was weakened from reviving nightmare and he had recently fought techno, So he was probably no where close to full power.I honestly think Clownpierce might be the most powerful character in the series.I mean he beat techno.Fought Nightmare briefly after he was weakened by both the fight and him reviving nightmare.Granted he still lost it he was still able to somewhat keep up with him.Also I have a theory that Nightmare could have potentially been corrupted by the 3 hearts.And the loneliness he felt as a child probably further corrupted him.I will edit more later.

I think that after Nightmarr beat Dream, he ran away. And Clown saw him and used the hearts to bury him in guilt and do what he did. I think Clown saw the power in dark emotions and became evil.

I thought at first Clown knew about Nightmares past and wanted to show Techno the truth. But now I’m thinking maybe Clown knew that if he and Techno fought it would always end in a draw and this reason is because Ethan can’t have Techno and Clown fight and one of them win so it will have to always end in a draw so in the story Clown decides to revive Nightmare, thinking he was just a full on evil being, to finally defeat Techno so he can be the superior.

@@SlinkyCorn a nice theory, and yes, I believe Clown knows Nightmare's past, given his lines from Dies Irae: "Concealed his friend out of plain sight"-which he did, he knew Nightmare and pretty much gave him no attention in that flashback as kids. "A sinister secret he sought to keep"-he saw the impact Nightmare's death had with Dream dying and sought to hide the power, giving the mask to Philza.

So, nightmare was actually being controlled by the mask and the clown. He was just broken and misunderstood. And my guess is that when nightmare was brought back, dream was too, and that'd what we just saw. Dream was standing by the tree with his mask in hand. This is by far my favorite of Ethans series, and I can't wait for the next episode.

Two emotionally devastating parallels I just noticed: 2:05 Techno does the same "alright, if this is what's best for you" nod to Nightmare as he does to Dream when Dream asks him to break Nightmare's staff back at the end of Season 1 (except this time he's not reluctant, he's uncertain). 3:08 Nightmare tries to instakill Clownpierce with the same spinning move Dream almost dropped him with back in the very first episode (which, based on Nightmare's expression when he blocked Dream's hit, was the closest Nightmare has ever come to being slain by a melee weapon).

If we look back to the first series, Nightmare was able to somehow merge with Dream, and when that happened, I assume their souls became tethered together, so even though the weapon broke in "Fade Away", the two were still connected. As such, when Nightmare died, Dream died, which makes no sense in the context of "Dies Irae", where Clownpierce appears for the first time. Also in this sense, when Nightmare was brought back, the soul tether or something similar also brought Dream back.

I think nightmare is no longer the villain of sleepwalking. he was manipulated and lied to. clown pierce made a mistake by showing him the dream world, and caused him to get angry, causing him to turn on him. ( 2:17 ) also a detail I noticed, the tables have turned. clown did what nightmare is doing to him at 3:18

My primary question now is: Has Nightmare been a separate *person* this whole time? We were led to believe Dream and Nightmare were two aspects or personalities of the same person, but now I'm wondering if Nightmare is maybe his twin? In all the flashbacks, he was separated and ignored, which could mean that Dream was just refusing and ignoring that darker aspect of himself, or Nightmare is a separate being entirely, who lived in Dream's shadow his whole life.

THE FACT THAT I THEORIZED almost EVERYTHING IN THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING yesterday I was thinking Ethan isn’t gonna focus as much on the lore and is gonna focus on a fight with some lore in between like the past episodes but now I’m thinking otherwise . but after the ending seen in the season 2 “movie” I thought of something Dream did something that made Nightmare want revenge against him which is what season 1 was, I thought of what if Dream shut Nightmare out so Dream had friends and Nightmare was lonely which is why Nightmare killed Sapnap and Bad BUT THEN his plan backfired and Techno showed up and he died. But I didn’t think of Dream and Nightmare being siblings? But I was also thinking what is the reason Clown is trying to bring Nightmare back and then I thought of what if Clown is trying to prove about how Nightmare was a victim. And yes I was correct! But OMG I’m shaking but also who was that a the end with Dreams mask? Edit: Ok I had a few minutes to think and now I’m theorizing that when young Nightmare started to beat up young Dream he felt regret bc they were brothers? and now if Dream gets revived Nightmare and Dream would be reunited and pick one: Best friends or Brothers. not even I’m sure I’m gonna go over the video multiple times later when I’m done with home school to see if I missed something. Edit2: Ok thanks to LilDaeDreamers comment I had a little secret in a corner to find at the end and it was a subtitle saying “Do you choose to walk in the light or dark?” And also the character at the end holding Dreams mask and hear me out Antfrost so the character at the end is wearing a glove WITH CLAWS Ant was Dreams friend, and at the beginning of sleepwalking we see Sapnap Bad and Ant, in the flashback we see Dream with Sapnap Bad and in the corner Ant. Antfrost is the only one from the friend group that is still alive and probably most likely has an urge to kill Nightmare. now all of my theories led to me making an entire story in my head after that and one of them was Techno having to protect Nightmare from everyone else because he was the only one who knew about Nightmare past and feels bad and now wants to help him. Now the lifesteal smp will probably want to hunt down Techno and Nightmare, Phil and Rek don’t know about Nightmares past so they might still think Nightmare is an enemy, and part of my theory still Ant just wants to kill Nightmare. Edit3: HOLD ON NEW THEORY! What if Clown gave Nightmare the spear, the one we see in season 1, what if Clown manipulated Nightmare in to evil, it could have started sometime before the time where the flashback where Nightmare started beating up Dream, so when Nightmare saw the flashback he realized he would have never reacted like that or do something like that, and realized what Clown did, so what I mean is the spear is what controlled Nightmare and contained all of his power and powers that he took from people he killed in season 1. When Nightmare saw the flashback he realized he killed his brother but Clown had manipulated him which is why Nightmare attacked Clown.

JK I'm not matpat, but I have a theory though: So you see how in the first reality segment both techno and nightmare that are in the dreamscape have this purple-ish haze surrounding them, similar to clown's staff around the Purple Heart. This could mean that clown is trying to bring Nightmare back to bring down Techno, but he lost control. Another thing I noticed is right before the scene of Nightmare beating the shit out of Dream as children, Techno hit the PURPLE HEART SPECIFICALLY, WHICH LED TO NIGHTMARE LEAVING THE MINDSCAPE. I absolutely loved that end fight! The movements were perfect, here's the interesting thing though: 1. Technoblade beat Nightmare in Fade Away. Even without Dream's help, he had his trident and Nightmare was disarmed. With the previous draw, Techno would have won that second fight alone anyway so... Technoblade > Nightmare ( before revival ) 2. Technoblade fought Clownpierce and ran away with a victory having taken the heart but still, he didn't win that. So by the looks of it, Clownpierce >/= Technoblade 3. Nightmare hit Clown with his axe TWICE and punched him in the face which looked like it hurt and even took one of his hearts with ease using it against him. Nightmare ( after revival ) > Clownpierce but that doesn't make any sense, it's like the triangle of Fire beats Earth, Earth beats Water and Water beats Fire except that this cannot be the case in fights where they are all similar just with different abilities and motives. This begs the question, Is Nightmare way more powerful than before? It seems like the only way that Nightmare can be stopped is by his own emotion stopping his rampage. ( Nightmare seems to be more than twice as powerful as Clown ) Does anyone agree with me? Is this a good theory as for what can happen?

P.S The first fight scene was a redo of the original fight between Dream and Nightmare. Since the moves were different, I think Techno was reliving the effort that Dream put into resisting Nightmare but he stopped the fight at the turning point where Dream began to lose after he was hit by one of Nightmare's axes which then put Nightmare into a memory of a second fight with Dream which broke him and took them out of the mind battle ( or Clownpierce ended it, doesn't really matter )

The person showed at the end of the video could possibly be the embodiment of Dream's soul manifested into a human since a mask was held by the person in the end.

THEORY TIME!!!! Ok so hear me out. Perhaps Nightmare all along was a seperate and real person from Dream living in his shadow his whole life up until it led him to severely beat and bring down Dream, leading up to the events of the first season. But in the flashback of Nightmare's past we see a young Technoblade watching his friends goofing around. To sum up what i'm saying... Nightmare and Techno knew each other since they were kids, but Techno never noticed him. Now I believe with that, Techno might have changed views on Nightmare and might not try to kill him now that he knows his past. But that might not be the same with Rek and Phil since they didn't see it. So now in the next episode I believe both Nightmare and Techno's group will get hunted by Clown since they left the scene when Clown was subdued. Also I may have theories on the person at the end holding Dream's mask and it could be Antfrost since he survived in the first season, has claws, and now wants to kill Nightmare for his actions. But it also could be another surviving member of the Dream SMP. Overall Nightmare might become an ally this season and may try to redeem himself and fight with Techno. Oh and in regards to the person speaking at the very end of the video... u know the purple text, it could be Ashwagg or even Ranboo (unpopular opinions but meh). I put this together with combinations of other theories.

Ok so we are on the exact same page but I thought of the Nightmare lived in Dreams shadow way before from the season 2 full series movie ending seen. Or you copied my comment because mine came out before yours and the Antfrost thing I wasn’t sure if anyone else would think the same thing and also I’m not accusing you I’m just wondering because if you thought the same thing I’m so happy. But also the “Dream smp” thing doesn’t exist in this universe because now that we have these flashbacks this is it’s own story and timeline so basically now we know the past isn’t Dream smp but the childhood trauma of Nightmare

Yes I copied parts of your theory and merged them into mine, but I'm not really sure if the one holding dream's mask is Ant since his skin color isn't light blue. Also this vid practically confirms Nightmare is a separate person from the beginning and we didn't know that until this video was released

​@@StarAnimusPerhaps the best theory I can come up with is he wanted to emotionally torture nightmare to force him to let out his anger on Techno hoping Nightmare would attack and end him. But since Clown kinda looked into his memories without his permission and forced him to relive things he wished to never remember again, it caused him to attack Clown instead.
