Man, I respect you being so vulnerable throughout this. The album hit really hard for me too, as someone that grew up in a religious household I dealt with a lot of struggle and turmoil over my personal identity and my relationship with God. It’s an ongoing battle but this album helped me come to terms with things I had been repressing and ignoring. Sending you love, strength, and prosperity always. I’m a big fan and I’ll stay tuned in for more content from you. Sun Bleached Flies is my favorite, it’s like the end credit song to life. Thanks for reacting, I really enjoyed this vid.

It’s so refreshing to see such absolute transparency and vulnerability when listening to music. Ethel really does hit right to the soul with some of her songs and her voice is so captivating that it’s impossible not to immerse yourself in the emotions or ideas she sings about. Getting emotional, especially during this album, is par for the course and it’s really admirable to see you express that so freely. Preacher’s Daughter is a wild ride but it’s such a brilliant album, especially with it being a concept album that’s very heavy on story elements. Thank you for taking the time to read through the lore alongside the songs, it can really help contextualise some songs, like Gibson Girl and Strangers! :)

Given that I've finished the video, I just wanted to come back and say I appreciate and admire your willingness to show vulnerability and open up to your viewers as it truly creates a sense of love and community between you and the audience. Keep doing what you're doing man, you're doing it well. My favorite songs on the album are Hard Times, Family Tree, Gibson Girl, and Strangers btw.

Hey man. I'm new to your channel but I love how you opened up. I really love your personality and I wish you the best. Plus Ethel Cain is just really talented. Also, as a sidenote, Ethel Cain, the actual artist, not the character, is a transgender woman irl who underwent a lot of religious trauma. Having that in the back of my mind really made the story that much more emotional and powerful, given the amount of social stigma around trans individuals. I'm a straight white guy but her being trans has opened me up to want to be more understanding of those different from me.

Wow I’ve been watching you for a bit, especially since you rock with The Marias and Omar which are my faves, but im a huge fan of this album and Ethel but I never requested it cause I wasn’t sure if it was your vibe. However I’m glad you did react to it, you have showed that you truly are a person who loves music and the art behind it and the way you opened up about that bc of an album like this, thanks man. I have so much respect for you man.

You should listen to Hozier’s Unreal Unearth! it celebrates its 1 year anniversary tomorrow and has a lot of similar themes to this album. it’s less dark in a way but still pretty dark and just as beautifully written/produced

i would like to add onto the Thouroghfare description, Ethel is a VERY unreliable narrator. What she says in that song is very different to what we find out through context clues. She makes it sound like a love story, when in reality, Isaiah kidnapped her. He never loved her and he planned on killing her the entire time.
@triniskittles_2 ай бұрын
that's why I love the transition from Thouroghfare to Gibson Girl SO much. it shows you the harsh reality compared to Ethel's daydreamed version of events.
@ginanickelson10157 күн бұрын
I read that like August Underground and Televangilism are both happening simultaneously , Thoroughfare and Gibson Girl are also two songs that happen simultaneously.
@triniskittles_7 күн бұрын
@ginanickelson1015 yes exactly!! I remember a post on Hayden's old tumblr saying that August Underground and Televangelism are simultaneously happening. I wouldn't be surprised if you're right and Thouroghfare and Gibson Girl are also at the same time, good catch!
@ginanickelson10157 күн бұрын
Another fun fact, Hayden Anhedönia (aka Ethel Cain) stated that even though the lore takes place in 1991, she wrote Preacher’s Daughter as a warning…like Ethel’s lore is the path she irl might have taken. Your reaction to this masterpiece was so heartfelt and genuine. I cry every time I listen to “Sun Bleached Flies,” and I listen to the EP in its entirety every day. You should listen to the acapella version of Ptolemaea because there are a lot of lyrics that are layered and are hard to hear with the instrumentals it’s even more heartbreaking and traumatic. Also, at the end of Thoroughfare (acapella version), you can hear Isaiah moaning in the background and at one point he says “oh yeah.” It’s at the very ending when Ethel is also humming in her already drug induced state of mind. P.S. I can’t wait for the Punish LP to drop. It’s happening to every-body.

I loved that this album allowed you to open up and reflect on your experiences and talk about them at the same time. But during "Hard Times" you said you were done cause the album wasn't about you, it's about her but Hayden (Ethel's real name) has stated that Ethel isn't the sort of of character that "is" in a way. She's more of a template that the listener can project themselves on and she has so many experiences that we can all relate to, so in a way the album is about you. it's about all of us.

Let’s goooo!!! In case you don’t know every song is like a chapter in a story! You should really look up the story and lore to each song and the album! I’m short Ethel Cain is a character who leaves home and reconciles with her childhood that was full of religious trauma and abuse. She sets out west in search of love but meets a lover who loses his mind after he abuses drugs. He starts drugging her and pimping her out to men! They’re so poor and he’s so far gone he murders Ethel and eats her body. She confronts him as a ghost and says a final goodbye to her mother who never knew what happened to her.
