So from what I understand in a zk rollup the sequencer sends the state difference to the contract in L1 as calldata. Is that calldata processed by the evm in order to check if the new state root is valid?

as far as i understand it's all completely self contained in the proof. that diff is NOT needed by the L1 contract to verify the proof or anything. but the proof must contain (or have with it) at least the new state root, otherwise you wouldn't know what you're proving.
