Do not use the camera crew again for Devcon 3. These people did not know how to film/direct a keynote. many slides were missed due to the director being asleep at the wheel and not switching cameras. The pan-the-audience shots are useful for an arena rock tour, not a developers conference. Find whoever is running the Chaos Communication Congress' setup, and pay them to run it. they'd do a much better job than these guys.

It frustrates me that the video shows the speaker and fly-overs of the audience, and at the same time leaves out entire slides. 4:10 is one example, and it goes on like this throughout the video. That's disappointing, because Vitalik is a great speaker and his slides are needed to understand what he is referring to.

The entire goal of the Blockchain is to delegate trust to a decentralized peer-to-peer system. This is done using either Proof of Work or Proof of Stake. Proof of Server is how you would call the "old" trust system, in which one entity controls the validity of the transation. The opposite of Blockchain.

I am a CS grad student and am getting a better understanding of the underlying technology behind Blockchain (BC) and its potential. But, I am sill kind of skeptical on bitcoin, ethereum, etc.. If we look at BC as a new technology to track a financial asset, say an new IPO on the stock market and this can show a chain of ownership, whether someone is attempting to manipulate it by insider trading, etc.. I am all for it. Also, another use case is about ownership of something.. say a hard consumer good like a car, washing machine, etc... those could be embedded with a Blockchain from manufacture to buyer and all the life of the product... all VIN, INSURANCE, TITLE, OWNERSHIP, MAINTENANCE is encoded every step of the way and all someone has to do is look at a app and it shows everything about the car and how it was maintained.. that is very valuable to a seller and buyer in the secondary market. I still don't fully understand the all the broad use cases yet for Etherium smart contracts with the limited knowledge that I possess on the subject, but what I see as a skeptic to the underlying broad scope of things are: who or what is in actual control of the money supply? but beyond that... when the gas and other 'fees' part was explained... it dawned on me.. this seems to be more about nicking fees and who controls the fees or "tolls" - in the business world -... who is the gatekeeper? and how big is the moat? My skeptical self instructs me that this is as much as who will get the 'fees' from uses, than about creating a new model of financial commerce and wrapping it in a utopian bow. Don't get me wrong... as a programmer, and all around nosey person... I like what I see, but still kind of holding it at half arm's length away until I 'gets' my head wrapped around this. Valery: improve your speech patterns.. stop with the 's' at the end of each verb... it's not only annoying.. but wrong and takes away from the genius that you are.. further, when and if this goes more mainstream, folks are more likely to take you seriously.

Ethereum numbers have no limit, correct? This like a fiat currency in that way, surely the value will go down as a result? I'm confused as to why it's a good investment long term.
@rumfordc7 жыл бұрын
ether is distributed algorithmically, according to a curved rate of inflation. New ether will always be added but less and less over time and nothing can change it. fiat currency has no such algorithmically enforced limit. In times of great inflation ether would rise in value relative to fiat.
@londonspade58967 жыл бұрын
Ah thanks

on a side note, that's pretty much how all cryptocurrencies work but the purpose of Ethereum isn't just to be another cryptocurrency its a Decentralized Consensus Network in other words a framework for creating applications that can't be stopped, censored or updated once started and are fully public to the network. The success of Ethereum will depend on the success of these applications, so that's most investments should take into account i think.

Still don't understand why do we need ethereum? How would it benefit us? I just understood blockchain today morning and then came across ethereum which supposedly is a blockchain platform for developing apps but then this guy talks about gas and the limited processing power. How would a limited processing power enable me to deploy high level apps? Or is it not meant for high level apps? Am I just supposed to send a message from a person to person? o.O I don't see the basic of why I would use this. It does not seem to be a framework like blockchain but some kind of prototype that enables scripting on page o.O but the variables available seems to be very few so how would I go about creating complex apps? or is solidity a powerful programming language? and does ethereum and solidity work in different ways where you don't have to worry about gas when coding with solidity but when ethereum runs it, it uses gas? o.O I don't even know how much a 4.7 million computational power can handle. Please someone explain :/

that's the goal ... bringing confusion on the actual creation of money but basically that one was done with bitcoin, using the blockchain technology. Ethereum attaches to it a contract linked then to the transaction. To my very humble understanding and as a summary, that's enough to describe it. Nothing new however, still money as we use it, still bringing a centralization of our overall organization.
@KingScorpio847 жыл бұрын
that is what i am thinking ethereum is just another central bank
@Holoverse7 жыл бұрын
its quite literally the opposite of that. A central bank requires a bank, to be central. With Ethereum, the only person who controls your ether is you. YOU are your own bank. Nobody but you controls your money/gas. And it has the neat little side effect of having a turing complete computer attached to it as well, for hordes of other interesting things. One day, when its further developed you'll understand why thats freakin amazing.
@olivierpreziosa17077 жыл бұрын
Let me ask you couple questions Holoverse ... what is the need for a cryptography then ? who holds the key of that one ? if you are the bank with Ethereum, as you say it, can you out of thin air create the money that you use ? At last, may you remind me who sells ETH to you ?

t's just one computer running in multiple machines that stores the value of 'ether' in each account and a list of key, value information. Think of the state as the current status of your computer now, for example the exact size of your browser's window at this right moment and think of the blockchain as the software siting on your hard drive when your computer is turned off. Still in my opinion everything would need more clarity. Things like the name 'Contract Accounts' is very unfortunate.
